Know your numbers Your blood pressure numbers are hugely important. Yet many of us have no idea what they are or what they should be. 120/80 is considered to be the optimum level. Th e fi rst number is your systolic blood pressure - the highest level your blood pressure reaches when your heart beats. Th e second number is your diastolic blood pressure - the lowest level your blood pressure reaches when your heart relaxes between beats. Th e higher these numbers are, the higher your risk of health problems. Check your BP regularly Blood pressure increases with age so even in your thirties you have a 30% chance of having raised blood pressure, putting you at risk of health problems.High blood pressure is responsible for 60% of strokes and 40% of heart attacks. Around 16 million people in the UK have it and it is estimated that a third of these – more than 5 million people - are unaware of it so are not taking any steps to reduce it. Blood Pressure UK believes everyone should know their blood pressure numbers so everyone can get a free blood pressure check from September 10th-16th during their annual awareness campaign, Know Your Numbers Week!
