New levels of power, economy and refinement. Two new engines for new Discovery 4,both setting new standards for performance. The new LR-TDV6 3.0 Advanced Sequential Turbo Diesel Engine uses the latest materials and sequential turbochargers to optimizeresponsiveness by delivering increased torque at very low revs. This is one of the most technically advanced diesel engines in the worldand uses unique, parallel sequential turbochargers for the first time in a V-engine.The new LR-V8 Petrol Engine improves driveability and harnesses the very latest technology for outstanding overall performance. For instance, it includes a torque actuated dual independent variable camshaft phasing system, shared with the new 2010 Range Roverand Range Rover Sport, to make the vehicle more reactive to driver inputs and driving conditions. The high-technology 2.7 litre TDV6 Diesel provides smooth torque distribution, flexibility, refinement and economy thanks to the latestcommon rail technology and innovative materials.20THE NEW LR-TDV6 3.0 ADVANCED SEQUENTIAL TURBO DIESEL ENGINE uses a sequential mode boosting system to increase the airdensity entering the engine’s cylinders, enabling a correspondingly greater amount of fuel to be injected for increased power outputand economy. This is a two turbocharger, two-stage system, which makes the engine more responsive as well as delivering class-leadingtorque and power. The primary stage, variable nozzle turbine operates over the entire rev range. Unlike in most single boost systems, the primary stage provides maximum performance up to 2,500rpm. Above 2,500rpm the secondary stage, fixed geometry turbineswitches into operation splitting the gas flow between the two turbochargers.THE NEW LR-V8 PETROL ENGINE’S camshaft torque actuated, dual independent Variable Camshaft Timing system continuouslycontrols camshaft timing to deliver an optimum balance of power, efficiency and emissions. The chain driven camshaft timing unitsare mounted on the end of each camshaft to advance or retardcamshaft timing and alter the camshaft to crankshaft phasing.Camshaft Profile Switching features two completely differentintake camshaft profiles machined into the same camshaft. The engine management system chooses the camshaft profiledepending on running conditions and torque demands: one profilefor low-speed/low-load driving; the other, with longer valve lift, for higher-speed/higher-loads.

Engine upgrades benefit from the latest investment in e_TERRAIN TECHNOLOGIES,specifically to reduce CO 2emissions and improve fuel consumption. An Intelligent PowerManagement System includes Smart Regenerative Charging so the battery is charged whenit is most economical to do so. Idle speeds are reduced and a ‘metering mode’ added to thediesel fuel injection system, delivering fuel at the exact rate needed - no more; no less.THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEMS ON BOTH NEW PETROL AND DIESEL ENGINES achieve highstandards of durability, combustion performance and refinement. The ultra-precise machining ofhigh-pressure injectors ensures a fine-quality spray of fuel into the combustion chambers andoptimises combustion conditions both at cruising speed and during acceleration. Both engines usea high-pressure, steel fuel rail. Fuel in the rail is detected by a high-pressure sensor which controlsflow into the rail by adjusting an electromagnetic valve in the high-pressure fuel pumps’ outlet.Fuel injection system shown here is on the Petrol engine. Shared technology is also available on the diesel engine.INCREASED SERVICE INTERVALS AND REDUCED COST OF OWNERSHIP are the result of the verylatest design, engineering and manufacturing techniques, as well as the use of technologicallyadvanced materials and components. The new petrol and diesel engines offer optimum performancecombined with premium refinement and significant reductions in Noise, Vibration and Harshness(NVH). All engines have been developed to cope with the specific requirements of a Land Roverproduct: strength and durability when operating in dusty environments, on steep inclines and wadingthrough rivers.21

Dynamic performance on-road.New Discovery 4 featuresadvanced technology thathelps keep the driver connectedwith the road and provides anenhanced, more engaged andentertaining drive. It makesgetting behind the wheel andheading for the open roadpure pleasure. Four-cornerelectronic air suspension*maintains a smooth, constantride regardless of thedistribution of passengersand size of load. Brakes areupgraded to handle the extrapower and torque of thenew engines.New Discovery 4 also features Roll Stability Control,an advanced safety system which intervenes tohelp maintain stability. For the keener driver anew variable ratio steering is fitted for greatermanoeuvrability at low speed and improved driverconfidence at higher speeds. Improvements to thesuspension geometry include a new, stiffer frontanti-roll bar. The result is outstanding, car-likehandling that does not compromise extreme axlearticulation and, consequently, the off-road abilityof the vehicle.* Fitted to many models as standard, please ask your Land Rover Dealerfor more information.22

Short front and rear overhangs. Exceptional ground clearance.Increased performance and torque from the new LR-TDV6 3.0Advanced Sequential Turbo Diesel engine and the new LR-V8 PetrolEngine. They make major contributions to new Discovery 4’s superioroff-road capability. And they help enable maximum manoeuvrabilityover some of the most difficult terrains. Long-travel, all-independentsuspension allows extreme wheel articulation. Ruts and rocks, forexample, are conquered with ease.Optional four-corner cross-linked air suspension provides class-leading car-like ride and handling, as well asa constant, level ride height, irrespective of the number of passengers or load distribution. Ride height canalso be raised by up to 125mm to clear tricky obstacles, or lowered by 50mm for easy access and loading.

26Whatever the surface, new Discovery 4 takes it on with confidence. The Terrain Response® dial, standard on derivatives with air suspension, gives access to over 60 years of Land Rover 4x4 expertise andstate-of-the-art dynamic technology. Enhanced with Land Rover’slatest e_TERRAIN TECHNOLOGIES, specifically to reduce CO 2 emissions,Discovery 4’s Intelligent Power Management System, shared withthe Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, compliments all Terrainperformance with energy saving technology.

Cruising on tarmac, driving over grass, gravel or snow, taking on mud and ruts, crossing sand andcrawling over rocks, Terrain Response® is your own off-road driving expert. Simply turn the new, more conveniently positioned dial and new Discovery 4’s engine, transmission, suspension, throttleand traction settings reconfigure for optimum driveability in all conditions. New Discovery 4 takes thistechnology a further step forward and includes new Sand Launch Control and enhanced traction duringRock Crawl Pre-charge which is a function that applies a small amount of brake pressure to each brakecalliper during very low speed driving. The new Sand Launch Control system helps prevent the wheelsspinning when moving off from a standstill and the vehicle ‘digging in’. Once the vehicle reaches theappropriate speed the slip threshold is returned to its normal state.27

AUTOMATIC HEADLAMPS WITH HIGH BEAM ASSIST detect vehicleheadlamps/tail lamps and dip the high beam until the light source isout of range. The system is able to distinguish between automotiveand non-automotive light sources.ADAPTIVE FRONT LIGHTING. For more relaxed night-time driving,Adaptive Lighting varies the light cast ahead of the vehicle so thatthe beams follow the curve of the road.DYNAMICS AND BRAKES. Upgraded suspension geometry, includinga new, stiffer front anti-roll bar, gives increased driver-focusand improves on-road dynamics without compromising off-roadability. The result is outstanding, car-like handling that does notcompromise extreme axle articulation and, consequently, theoff-road ability of the vehicle. Brakes are enhanced for improvedfeel and performance on the new engines with larger diameterdiscs. Added confidence and capability from New Discovery 4.STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS. New steering wheel design withrevised switch layout for driver information and remote audiocontrols. Cruise control, telephone and heated steering wheelcontrols are optional dependant on the vehicle derivative.THE AWARD WINNING TERRAIN RESPONSE SYSTEM optimisesthe vehicle set-up for virtually all on-road or off-road drivingsituations, with five different settings to suit different terrainssuch as grass/gravel/snow, sand, mud and ruts and rock crawl.GRADIENT RELEASE CONTROL. Key to new Discovery 4’s strength, safety and outstanding on-road and off-road dynamics is the Integrated Body-frame. A Land Rover patented technology,it delivers more than the comfort, refinement and on-road attributes of a monocoque design. It sets new standards for off-road performance too. Other featuresinclude Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) which supplies extra brake pressure in an emergency, and Electronic Traction Control (ETC)which helps maintain optimum grip. There is also the option of Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), designed to warn you of low tyre pressure. Dynamic StabilityControl (DSC) and Roll Stability Control work with the braking system and are designed to correct cornering over or understeer and to help maintain stability atall times. Up to eight airbags are fitted: the front seats have both front and side airbags with each seat row having its own curtain airbags. For a better view aheadon bends and a more effortless night-time drive, new Discovery 4’s optional Adaptive Front Lighting varies the headlamp light cast, ensuring the beams follow thecurve of the road. Optional Automatic High Beam Assist detects oncoming or followed vehicles to switch between high and dipped beam.31

A new, cutting edge development is the introduction of Tow Assist, a next-generation reversing aid thatpredicts the rearward trajectory of both vehicle and trailer. This helps the driver perform more accuratemanoeuvres and is selected from the Touch-screen menu. Wide-view cameras on the vehicle give a clearfield of vision; guidelines are superimposed over the resulting image to highlight the suggested reversingpath for vehicle and trailer.Other towing aids are Tow Hitch Assist and Trailer Stability Assist. The latter detects potentially dangeroustrailer oscillations by monitoring vehicle behaviour such as a slight swing in response to trailer movements. It can initiate engine torque reduction and intervenes using the brakes to bring vehicle and trailer backunder control. Tow Hitch Assist helps hitching a trailer to the tow ball.32

New Discovery 4 is so capableand adaptable it can getstraight to work across ahuge variety of vastly differingterrain, conditions and roles.Even so, some owners want to add their own stampof individuality by tailoring their new Discovery 4to their specific needs with a range of stylish, practical accessories. Accessories that aretough, versatile and bring an opportunity forpersonalisation to new Discovery 4. Importantly, these accessories can be added at any stageduring the vehicle’s life - not just when it’s new.

Our commitment is to a sustainable future. Everything from the design of our vehicles andthe way we build them, to how and where we use them and, at the end of their life, to how theycan be safely disposed of, Land Rover is committed to a sustainable future. We’re committed toreducing our impact on the environment and are working in four key areas.e_TERRAIN TECHNOLOGIES.In 2007 we announced a joint investment intonew technologies to improve the environmentalperformance of our vehicles. This joint investmentnow stands at £800m. Building on the innovation ofthe Land_e concept, the first of these technologiesis the Stop/Start engine in our diesel manualFreelander 2. In 2008 we revealed our new conceptvehicle, the LRX; a Land Rover in body and spirit butconceived as a hybrid 2.0 litre diesel with potentialCO 2 emissions of 120g/km.SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING.World class manufacturing facilities. Certified to ISO14001 since 1998.Our manufacturing facilities at Solihull and Halewood have reduced emissions byaround 4 percent year on year, over the last 5 years. Our TDV6 and TDV8 enginesare assembled in the Dagenham Diesel Centre which is powered by wind turbines.Total energy used in manufacturing each vehicle has been reduced by 19 percentsince 2002. While water use per vehicle has been cut by 14 percent in the same period. We’re also offsetting all CO 2 emissions by the manufacturing assembly of Land Rovervehicles at both plants. Partnered with specialist organisation Climate Care, ouroffset projects include a wind farm in China and hydro electric generators in Tajikistan. In addition, Land Rover vehicles are now designed to be 85 percent recyclable with allcurrent models meeting the European End of Life Vehicles Directive. Sustainable andrecyclable materials play an important role too: Freelander 2 contains 10 percentrecycled and 10 percent renewable materials.

CO 2 OFFSETTING in 2006, in the UK,we launched a pioneering programme for customers, independently administered by Climate Care, to offsetCO 2 emissions for the first 45,000 miles (72,000 km)driven of all new Land Rovers. This programme is beingrolled out progressively to other countries; to date inAustria, Belgium, The Netherlands, France, The MiddleEast, Norway and Sweden. In addition, we’re also thefirst automotive company to offset 100 percent ofour manufacturing assembly CO 2 emissions.GLOBAL CONSERVATION AND HUMANITARIAN PROJECTS.Land Rover vehicles are used by conservation and humanitarian organisations worldwideand are often first choice for difficult tasks. Organisations include the Born Free Foundation,Biosphere Expeditions, Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), China Exploration and ResearchSociety and Earthwatch Institute. Our projects are diverse, ranging from an initiative tohelp with the protection of rare wolves in Ethiopia, to a project funded by our CO 2 offsetprogramme which provides efficient cooking stoves to rural parts of Uganda. Our planet. We take our responsibility to our planet very seriously. Our vehicles are designed forpurpose. As part of our Fragile Earth policy Land Rover has actively promoted responsible off-roaddriving since 1990. Our Experience Centres teach drivers to understand the full potential and uniquebreadth of capability of their vehicles while reducing impact on nature and the environment, in awide range of activities. To find out more, and to see our progress, visit www.landrover.com/ourplanet47
