cannot study full-time due to a lack of resources or because of career expectations, is growing.More than 25% of all our students are pursuing courses by distance learning. With a total student body of more than 8 000 and some coming from 26 countries worldwideincluding European countries such as Finland and Germany, the University can no longer beconsidered as a small national institution. The growing number of foreign students is a clearindication of the international recognition of the quality of UNAM’s education. In 2007 UNAM awarded 551 certificates and diplomas, 594 Bachelor degrees, 74 Post-graduatediplomas, and 59 Masters degrees. One member of staff, Dr. J.M. van der Vyver, received a Ph.D.in Nursing Science. The graduates came from all disciples represented on the UNAM faculties:Agriculture and Natural Resources, Economics and Management Science, Education, Humanitiesand Social Science, Law, Medical and Health Sciences, and Sciences. Several of these degreeswere awarded through distance learning programmes of the Centre for External Studies. Thegrowing number of graduates from our Northern campus is an encouraging sign that UNAMtakes the educational needs of Namibians all over the country serious. Council is proud of theaccomplishments of its students, and this I wish to commend all staff for a job well done.Council has noted with appreciation the international partnerships of faculties and centres. TheUniversity is involved in projects with respected universities and academic institutions worldwide, including Von Humbolt University (Germany), Oulu University (Finland), Stanford University(USA), University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), University of Toronto (Canada) and FreeUniversity of Berlin (Germany), to mention only a few. Despite being a young university, UNAMhas become part of the global academic forums and plays an important role in making an Africancontribution to international research. Council takes pride in the fact that UNAM’s internationalstanding continues to rise because of the international networking of our academicians.Apart from their teaching obligations, the academic staff of the University have been involved inseveral research projects, despite the constraints of limited funding. The demand for researchfunding exceeds the available resources by far. Yet, in 2007, the academic staff were involved inseveral research projects, often with the assistance of international grants and UNAM funding.Council prides itself in the good research results, including scientific publications, articles inaccredited journals and joint publications with other universities and researchers. The University expects its academic staff to dedicate approximately 20% of their time tocommunity service. In 2007 the University served the Namibian community in presenting capacitybuilding workshops and training programmes to several Government ministries and para-statals.xv
