3. Overview of Key Activities3.1 IntroductionSeveral key University activities were performed during the year under review, ranging from anew undergraduate curricula to the start of construction for the new Faculty of Engineering andInformation Technology. The period also witnessed the successful launching of UNAM’s Third FiveYear Strategic Plan. The Annual Report indicates relatively high productivity in research output,and active community engagement in most Faculties and Centres.3.2 Academic ProgrammesIn 2007, UNAM reviewed its curricula at undergraduate level, in line with the National QualificationsFramework (NQF) and Namibia’s Vision 2030. The University target is for all undergraduatedegree programmes to be registered at level 8 of the NQF. Construction of buildings for the newFaculty of Engineering and Information Technology commenced at Ongwediva and phase 1 willbe completed by end of 2008, for the first student intake in academic year 2009. There was alsomajor expansion of facilities at the UNAM Main Campus, the Northern Campus, and the SamNujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre at Henties Bay.Several new programmes were introduced to meet demands of stakeholders by the Faculties ofEconomics and Management Science; Humanities and Social Sciences; Law; Medical and HealthSciences; Faculty of Science; and the Language Centre. The Postgraduate Studies Unit facilitatedtraining in postgraduate teaching and research supervision for academic staff members.The Teaching and Learning Improvement Unit continued to provide advice to all departments oncurriculum review to ensure all curricula conform to the NQF requirements. The Unit also carriedout a university wide survey on factors that influence the quality of teaching at UNAM.The UNAM Library online collection witnessed further growth in 2007, through the acquisition ofmore electronic sources. The Library was nominated by Greenstone Software which is used forcreation of digital content, to be the coordinating and training centre for Southern Africa.The Centre for External Studies held a Stakeholders workshop attended by academic staff andstakeholders from the whole education sector in Namibia. In addition, CES continued to producelearning and teaching materials for distance education.3.3 Staff MattersA key characteristic of this item was the large number of staff members who went for furtherstudies at both Masters and PhD levels as part of the capacity building strategy of UNAM.12
In 2007 the total number of academic staff was 340 (Table 2), across Faculties and Centres at theUniversity. The figure indicates a slight growth of academic staff numbers by one per cent from2006 to 2007.
