UNAM remained committed to her Mission by undertaking basic and applied research in order tocontribute to the social, economic, cultural and political development of the country.The Namibian Government has entrusted the University with the rice project in the Caprivi, afterforeign experts whom it commissioned to work on the project were unable to participate. Otherresearch currently undertaken by the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources include projectson the management of bush encroachment, fodder production for the Ogongo Dairy DevelopmentProgramme and productivity of smallholder goat farming in Omusati to name a few. The Faculty ofScience continued their research on parasitic plants, while the Faculty of Education launched theNamibian Vocational Interest Inventory – the first ever Namibian norm based and standardizedpsychometric test. The pioneering research by the Department of Chemistry on compounds thatcan cure malaria produced very exciting results as demonstrated by tests conducted in the USA.The annual research conference at the Northern Campus under the theme “Addressing Barriers toDevelopment” was once again well attended and provided a platform for researchers to exchangeideas and embark on collaborative activities.The year 2007 also witnessed the launch of Namibian Development Journal – an in-house peerreviewed electronic publication by the University of Namibia. It is intended to publish originalresearch as well as review papers and book reviews in the broad area of national developmentin Namibia. This is one of the initiatives by the University of Namibia to provide opportunities forstaff members to disseminate their research results to a wider community and thereby enhancethe research culture at the University.2.6 ConclusionAs with all universities worldwide that constantly improve their service delivery and academicstandards, the University of Namibia is also not static as it kept pace with academic developmentsin the region and the world at large.10
