The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Namibia</strong> - Mission StatementThe <strong>2007</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Namibia</strong> describes the activities inrelation to its Mission Statement, which outlines its aims, objectives, operationalprinciples, and goals. These are:to continue to develop the <strong>University</strong> as a leading national institution and amajor role model for research as a major contributor to nation-building, andthe high priority given by the <strong>University</strong> to applied research across a broadspectrum <strong>of</strong> relevant fields and to encourage inter-disciplinary approaches tothe resolution <strong>of</strong> real-world problems;cultivate standards <strong>of</strong> excellence in teaching, research, and all the prescribedfunctions <strong>of</strong> UNAM, through encouraging constructive criticism, constant selfimprovement,self-evaluation, and peer assessment;make the <strong>University</strong> services expertise, skills scholarly leadership, and facilitiesaccessible to all such persons as are likely to benefit from them, regardless <strong>of</strong>race, colour, gender ethnic origin, religion, creed, physical condition, socialand economic status;safeguard and promote principles <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> autonomy, with the view toproviding an appropriate atmosphere, and opportunities for UNAM’s scholarsto pursue the development <strong>of</strong> their highest intellectual potential;serve as a repository for the preservation, development and articulation <strong>of</strong>national values and culture, through the promotion <strong>of</strong> <strong>Namibia</strong>n history, artand languages;undertake basic and applied research, with the view to contributing to thesocial, economic, cultural and political development <strong>of</strong> <strong>Namibia</strong>;encourage endogenous development and application <strong>of</strong> science andtechnology;provide advisory, consultancy, and extension services throughout the country,with the view to promoting community education and appropriate know-how,thus enhancing society’s productivity and socio-economic development; andto promote national and regional unity and understanding.vii
