While chamber musicspans many eras, genres and forms, it is music written or arranged for asmall group of instruments. It requires the development of both musicaland social skills, as each instrument has its own part that gives voice to amusical conversation. Whether amateur or professional, being able tocollaborate with other musicians is a vital skill that is honed throughchamber music. In chamber music, students learn to communicate anddevelop close relationships through music, to give expression to a vast,wide-ranging body of repertoire, and to make music for the enjoyment ofmusician, ensemble and audience.Numberof HonorsEnsemblesDayTimeBarbara E. 3nnnWelcome to the 117th school year of Third Street Music School Settlement! I amdelighted that you have chosen to join this warm and nurturing community, onethat strives to enable each student to achieve his or her full musical potential.Third Street Music School is many things to many people: it’s a place for toddlers to taketheir first steps as they explore the world of organized sound; it’s a place for school-age childrento hone skills and techniques that will provide a lifetime of learning and enjoyment; it’s aplace where students and their families come together to form social networks; and it’s a placefor adults and seniors to continue their lifelong exploration of music and the joy it brings.WELCOMEThere are many new and exciting happenings at ThirdStreet, many of which are described in this catalog. Here are a few highlights:Musicianship classes—music theory and composition—are an important part of learning a musical instrumentand they are also fields of music study in their own right. FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORWe feel so strongly about the importance of musicianshipclasses that we are expanding the School’s offerings so that musicianship classes are offeredmore frequently as a convenience to students. We have also added Jazz Theory and Improvisationto help further advance the growth of the Jazz Program at Third Street. We are thrilled to announce the creation of the Third Street Dance Company. Third Street is hometo many talented and passionate dancers. The Company’s various ensembles, like the School’sbands, orchestras and choruses, will rehearse every week and present performances throughoutthe year.Did you know that there are Endangered Instruments? They’re not exactly the same as endangeredanimals, but the concept is similar. The world (including Third Street!) needs more players of theviola, string bass, oboe, bassoon, French horn, orchestral percussion instruments, trombone andtuba. To continue enriching Third Street’s musical environment, the School will offer a first-year10% discount on tuition for all school-age students who study an endangered instrument. And, preference will be given to need-based financial aid requests for students who study anendangered instrument. That’s a short summary of a few of the new programs and initiatives for this year. Thegoal, as always, is to make your learning experience at Third Street as rich and rewarding aspossible.Again, welcome, and here’s to a year filled with music, dance and joy!Lee Koonce, Executive Director

Students can apply theskills they acquire to all areas of their early childhood learning, especiallybuilding a strong foundation for future music and dance activities.BEGINNER GROUP CLASSESBeginner group classes are an effective way to start learning a newinstrument in an exciting and supportive environment. 10 OVERVIEWABOUT TRADITIONAL AND SUZUKIINSTRUCTION METHODSTraditional Method Instruction (for all instruments and voice)There isn’t one traditional method for teaching music. The most effectiveteachers bring the best of what they have learned through their own trainingand experience and develop an approach that enables them to respond tothe needs of each individual student. In general, however, the traditionalapproach to music study integrates note reading concurrently with playingand the repertoire is customized to the student’s needs and interests. Thetraditional approach is best suited to adults and children over the age offive who have already begun to read words. Parent/guardian participationin a child’s lesson, though desirable, is optional with the traditional methodof instruction.Suzuki Method Instruction(piano, violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute)The Suzuki Method of instruction, which is as much a life philosophy as it isa method, was developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in Japan after the end ofWorld War II. Dr. Suzuki believed that all children are innately musical, thatthey can excel musically and that a “beautiful heart,” sensitivity anddiscipline can be achieved through hearing and playing music when startedearly in life. The Suzuki Method is most effective when started with veryyoung children. Here are some basic hallmarks of the Suzuki Method:n The method is based on the way children learn their native language—by listening and imitating. Pieces are learned by ear (without readingmusic) and played from memory. Note reading is incorporated later onin the child’s training.n Parent, teacher and child are all active participants in the learning process.Parents must be willing to learn the instruction method and make acommitment to attend lessons, group classes and performances. Parentsare also required to participate in at-home practice.n The curriculum uses a common repertoire which is organized by books ofadvancing levels, starting with Book 1. The common repertoire enablesstudents to play with each other and creates an international communityof Suzuki learners.n In addition to individual or partner lessons, young Suzuki students arerequired to attend a weekly repertoire class. The purpose of this class is toreview and reinforce pieces learned in individual lessons while developingmusicality and ensemble playing skills, often using games to highlightimportant technical points and promote music reading skills. Repertoireclasses also promote development of musical rapport among students.
