COURSE LISTINGS 27PERFORMANCE AT THIRD STREETPerformance is an extremely important part of Third Street’s musical life,with more than 250 student, faculty and guest artist performancesthroughout the year. The School strongly encourages all students toperform in public as often as possible. Performing helps teachers andstudents set goals and achieve them! Performance opportunities include:n Music Hours. These student recitals are programmed by instrumentand conducted by each respective department chairperson. (For example,all string students perform at the “String Music Hour,” all piano studentsperform at the “Piano Music Hour.”) Music Hours provide an opportunityfor students to try out new pieces, polish old ones and prepare forupcoming recitals and concerts. Music Hours are relaxed and informaland take place in a supportive and nurturing environment. Students areexpected to attend Music Hours to perform and also to learn how tobecome good audience members.Music Hours take place on Saturday afternoons for both string andpiano students; on Monday evenings for woodwind, brass and percussionstudents; and at varying days and times for other departments.Please note that participation in Music Hours and other public performancesmay be a requirement for certain merit-based scholarships and/or needbasedfinancial aid. All students should check with their teachers, departmentchairs or Student Support Services for more information.n Studio Recitals. Students who study with the same teacher performin an annual Studio Recital, usually during the second half of theschool year.n Department Recitals. Each department gives several recitalsthroughout the year to showcase students who have made exceptionalprogress. Students are recommended to perform at a DepartmentRecital by their instructor. Department Chairperson approval is required.n Program & Special Recitals. Most program departments and alllarge ensembles also give performances throughout the school year.Examples include the Barbara E. Field Chamber Music Program, allorchestras and bands, certificate programs and the String Department’sString ‘Stravaganza Concerts.n All-School Recitals. Students are selected by audition to performat these recitals, including the Stowe C. Phelps Annual Student Concertheld in May and the Holiday Music Hour held in December.
