COURSE LISTINGS 23COMPOSITIONThe Composition curriculum covers three main topics: melodic development;choral and imitative accompaniments; and instrumentation andarrangement. Students explore both contemporary and classical styles inthe composition courses and students’ original compositions are presentedin several performances throughout the school year. The prerequisite forComposition I is a minimum of one year of music study. Students are placedin the appropriate level course by taking a placement exam or by permissionof the instructor.JAZZ THEORY, IMPROVISATION & COMPOSITIONJazz music originated in the United States around the beginning of the 20 thcentury and encompasses many different styles, from swing to blues toragtime to bebop. One key element common to almost all of these styles isimprovisation. A strong base in jazz theory, performance and improvisationcan also provide an excellent background for popular styles of music. The<strong>School</strong> offers two levels of Jazz Theory. Students who are participating inJazz Ensembles, Jazz Prep or Jazz Big Band are encouraged to enroll in a JazzTheory, Improvisation and Composition class at <strong>Third</strong> <strong>Street</strong>. To participatein the Jazz Program, students must have completed at least one year ofinstruction on their instrument.THEORY-IN-A-BOXTheory-in-a-Box is an interactive, Web-based course designed for independentstudy and as an enhancement to the <strong>School</strong>’s on-site theory, composition andjazz theory classes. The course is recommended for students age 10 and upand teaches the basics of first-year theory (rhythm, meter, basic harmonyand pitch) in a fun and engaging way. Before going on to the next section,each student must take an online test to ensure mastery of the materialpreviously learned.To enroll in Theory-in-a-Box, students are asked to complete a registrationform which requires the recommendation of a <strong>Third</strong> <strong>Street</strong> faculty member.THOSE SIX DAYS BETWEEN:A WORKSHOP ABOUT PRACTICEGet on the right path with your young musician. Be his coach, her assistant,his biggest fan. Parental support is crucial to your child’s success in theseearly years. Learn how you can help. In this seminar, you will learn specific,concrete techniques for meeting the challenges that everyone encounterswhen learning to play an instrument. Parents will learn how to help theirchild enjoy and feel good about practice and children will get moresatisfaction out of their practice time. The parents only workshop is designedfor parents of 3 to 10 year olds.
