COURSE LISTINGS 17STRING <strong>INSTRUCTION</strong>The String Department welcomes students of all ages and levels in violin,viola, cello and string bass. All instruction for school-aged students employsthe Suzuki Method, requiring all students to take one individual lesson andone Suzuki Repertoire Class (Rep Class) each week. Students are assigned toa Repertoire Class by the Department Chairperson based on level and teacherrecommendation. Many string faculty members incorporate their ownteaching styles and methods into this Suzuki program, including the recentlypublished Mark O’Connor Method, to meet the individual needs and interestsof students. String students participating in the program must be availablefor Saturday Rep Classes. Beginner violin repertoire classes are scheduledon Fridays. Please see page 10 for a description of the Suzuki Method.Initial Interview / Orientation: New students age 5 and under,or students with prior playing experience, must meet one-on-one with theDepartment Chairperson to evaluate readiness or skill level. All other studentsand parents participate in group orientation and placement sessions heldonce weekly during the fall and twice per month during the spring. Dates for the 2011-2012 school year will beposted in the fall.BARBARA E. FIELD CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAMString students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Barbara E.Field Chamber <strong>Music</strong> Program, which is open to all students by audition.See page 25 for a complete description of this program.LARGE & SMALL ENSEMBLESStudents, with recommendation by their teacher and the String DepartmentChairperson, are encouraged to play in one of the <strong>School</strong>’s tuition-free HonorsEnrichment Program ensembles.
