DUTCH PROJECTS<br />

• CORNEA Jochem de Vries ; NFI Productions<br />

Feature film debut of Amsterdam-based Jochem de Vries whose short film ‘M<strong>is</strong>sen’ was<br />

nominated for a Palme d’Or 2009. H<strong>is</strong> short documentary, ‘Trans-Siberian Voices’, also<br />

screened at Cannes 2009 (Critics Week). NFI Productions’ feature films include ‘Does it<br />

Hurt?’ (2006) <strong>by</strong> Aneta Lesnikovska, nominated for a Tiger Award IFFR 2007. Esther Rots’<br />

feature ‘Can Go Through Skin’ (2009) was selected for the Forum, Berlinale 2009.<br />

• HEAVEN ON EARTH Pieter Kuijpers; Pupkin <strong>Film</strong>s<br />

Pupkin <strong>Film</strong>s’ co-founder Pieter Kuijpers’ first feature film, ‘Godforsaken’ (‘Van God Los’,<br />

2003), received Golden Calf Awards for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actor. Since<br />

then he has directed ‘Off Screen’ (2005), ‘De griezelbus’ (2005), which received Best of the<br />

Fest Award at the Chicago International Children’s <strong>Film</strong> Fest, ‘Denn<strong>is</strong> P.’ (2007), which won<br />

Golden Calves for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, and ‘Nothing To Lose’<br />

(‘TBS’, 2008) which won the Jury Award at the Philidelphia <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> 2008.<br />

• KNEELING ON A BED OF VIOLETS Ben Sombogaart; NL <strong>Film</strong> & TV<br />

Based on the Dutch novel of the same name <strong>by</strong> Jan Siebelink. Sombogaart’s feature films<br />

include ‘Bride Flight’ (2008), ‘Crusade in Jeans’ (2006) and ‘Twin S<strong>is</strong>ters’ (2002), which was<br />

nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language <strong>Film</strong> 2003. ‘<strong>The</strong> Storm’, also<br />

produced <strong>by</strong> NL <strong>Film</strong> & TV, will be shown during th<strong>is</strong> year’s Netherlands <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>.<br />

• LAND Jan-Willem van Ewijk; Augustus <strong>Film</strong><br />

Having worked as an investment banker before making h<strong>is</strong> very well-received international<br />

debut feature ‘Nu’, Van Ewijk was selected to participate in th<strong>is</strong> year’s Sundance<br />

Screenwriters’ Lab with ‘Land’, co-written with Moroccan Abdelhadi Samih, to be produced<br />

<strong>by</strong> Bero Beyer (‘Parad<strong>is</strong>e Now’, 2005).<br />

• MY SISTER CAME BY TODAY Yan Ting Yuen; serious<strong>Film</strong><br />

<strong>Film</strong>maker Yan Ting Yuen’s first feature, the documentary ‘Yang Ban Xi’: ‘<strong>The</strong> 8 Modelworks’<br />

(2005), was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize for Best Foreign Documentary at Sundance<br />

2005. Rotterdam-based production company serious<strong>Film</strong> <strong>is</strong> owned <strong>by</strong> Marc <strong>The</strong>losen, Koert<br />

Davidse and Yan Ting Yuen. Productions include ‘Manifesto for a Free Fall’ (2008) and ‘<strong>The</strong><br />

World as a Collection’ (2007).<br />

• NAMUS Paula van der Oest; Pupkin <strong>Film</strong>s<br />

Paula van der Oest <strong>is</strong> currently fin<strong>is</strong>hing ‘Smoke and Ochre’, (starring Carice van Houten,<br />

producer Riba <strong>Film</strong> International/IDTV <strong>Film</strong>). Her ‘Zus & Zo’, produced <strong>by</strong> De Luwte, was<br />

nominated for the Foreign Language Oscar in 2003. Producer/director Pieter Kuijpers’ films<br />

include a.o. ‘Nothing to Lose’ (‘TBS’ 2008) and ‘Godforsaken’ (‘Van God Los’, 2003).<br />

• THE PRESIDENT Marcel V<strong>is</strong>been; Selwyn <strong>Film</strong><br />

<strong>Film</strong>maker, theatre director, prose writer and owner of Selwyn <strong>Film</strong>s, Marcel V<strong>is</strong>been’s first<br />

short film was the award-winning ‘Elv<strong>is</strong> Lives’ (1997). In 2004 he directed h<strong>is</strong> first feature<br />

film ‘Public Enemy’, followed <strong>by</strong> ‘Linoleum’ a year later.<br />

• FOEKJE & FANNY Pieter Verhoeff; Waterland <strong>Film</strong> & TV<br />

‘Foekje & Fanny’ focusses on the tragic career of athlete Foekje Dillema who was suspended<br />

in 1950, suspected of being a man. Her reputation was restored only in 2007. Producer<br />

Waterland <strong>Film</strong> & TV and filmmaker Verhoeff (‘Letter to the King’) aim to release the film in<br />

time for the 2010 Olympic Games.<br />

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS<br />

AUSTRIA<br />

• DER FALL TRAKL Michael Ginthoer; Freibeuter<strong>Film</strong>s<br />

Writer and director Michael Ginthoer worked on numerous magazines before moving to Los<br />

Angeles where he made the award-winning documentaries ‘Zen and Zero and Life’ (2006)<br />

and ‘Life and Times’(2007). ‘<strong>The</strong> Trakl Affair’ <strong>is</strong> h<strong>is</strong> first feature-length script, co-written <strong>by</strong><br />

Katharina Held (‘<strong>The</strong> Educators’).<br />

BELGIUM<br />

• AIMER A PERDRE LA RAISON Joachim Lafosse; Versus Productions<br />

2006 was the breakthrough year for Lafosse when h<strong>is</strong> ‘Ça rend heureux’ was selected for<br />

Locarno competition and won the Grand Prix at the <strong>Festival</strong> Premiers Plans d'Angers. In the<br />

same year he was in Venice competition with ‘Nue propriété’. In 2008 h<strong>is</strong> ‘Elève libre’<br />

screened in Cannes Directors Fortnight. <strong>The</strong> Versus Productions filmography includes a.o.<br />

‘Eldorado’ (Bouli Lanners, 2008), ‘Unspoken’ (Fien Troch, 2008) and ‘Indigènes’ (Rachid<br />

Bouchareb, 2008).<br />

CROATIA<br />

• FROG Antonio Nuic; Propeler <strong>Film</strong>s & <strong>Film</strong> and Music Entertainment (UK)<br />

Director and scriptwriter Nuic’s first feature film, ‘All for Free’ (2006), won the Golden<br />

Arena Awards for Best Movie, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Female Supporting<br />

Role at the Pula <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>. It was also awarded the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Male<br />

Leading role at the Sarajevo <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>. H<strong>is</strong> second feature, ‘Donkey’ (2009), premiered in<br />

Sarajevo.<br />

FRANCE<br />

• NOMADES Olivier Coussemacq; Local <strong>Film</strong>s<br />

With h<strong>is</strong> debut feature , ‘L’Enfance du Mal’ (‘Sweet Evil’), about to be released in France,<br />

‘Nomades’ (‘<strong>The</strong> Boy Who Did Not Cry’) will be Olivier Coussemacq's second feature film.<br />

‘Nomades’ <strong>is</strong> produced<strong>by</strong> Local <strong>Film</strong>s, a company with more than 50 titles under its belt,<br />

many of which have been selected for major international festivals.<br />

GERMANY<br />

• MR. LU’S BLUES Maria von Heland; 27 <strong>Film</strong>s Production<br />

Stockholm-born von Heland’s first theatrical feature, ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ (2002), was<br />

released internationally <strong>by</strong> Columbia Pictures. Her short film ‘Real Men Eat Meat’ received<br />

a.o. the International Canal+ Award. She was contributing writer on‘<strong>The</strong> Rainbowmaker’<br />

(Nana Djordjadze, 2008) which was also produced <strong>by</strong> Paul Verhoeven’s ‘Black Book’ coproducer<br />

27 <strong>Film</strong>s Production.<br />

• DIE INNERE ZONE Fosco & Donatello Dubini; Dubini <strong>Film</strong>produktion<br />

<strong>The</strong> Dubin<strong>is</strong>’ first feature film, ‘Ludwig 1881’ (1993, starring Helmut Berger), screened in<br />

competition in Locarno. <strong>The</strong>ir second film, ‘Die Re<strong>is</strong>e nach Kafir<strong>is</strong>tan’ (2001), was an<br />

international coproduction between Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, and was<br />

invited to numerous international film festivals. <strong>The</strong> company has worked extensively in the<br />

field of screenplay and production and has adv<strong>is</strong>ed on feature films <strong>by</strong> Ermano Olmi, Robert<br />

Frank and Yossi Sommer.<br />

HUNGARY<br />

• LIZA, THE FOX-FAIRY Károly Ujj Mészáros; <strong>Film</strong>team Ltd<br />

Debut feature <strong>by</strong> Károly Ujj Mészáros, one of Hungary’s busiest commercial directors, whose<br />

‘Alenea’s Journey’ won Best Short at the Hungarian <strong>Film</strong>week 2009. <strong>Film</strong>team, a company that <strong>is</strong><br />

representative of the emerging Hungarian new wave, produced ‘Dealer’ (Benedek Fliegauf, 2004),<br />

among other titles.<br />

IRELAND<br />

• MY BROTHERS Paul Fraser; Treasure Entertainment<br />

Directorial feature debut. Paul Fraser’s short film, ‘Scummy Man’, received a Golden Bear<br />

nomination at Berlinale 2007. As a screenwriter h<strong>is</strong> collaboration with director Shane<br />

Meadows has resulted in a.o. ‘Twentyfourseven’ (1998), ‘Once Upon a Time in the Midlands’<br />

(2001) and ‘Somers Town’ (2008).<br />

• MISTER JOHN Chr<strong>is</strong>tine Molloy & Joe Lawlor; Samson <strong>Film</strong><br />

‘Helen’ (2008), Molloy and Lawlor’s critically acclaimed award-winning debut feature film (<br />

“…the latest vital sign of a UK art-cinema resurgence”, <strong>The</strong> Independent), secured releases in<br />

several territories in addition to selections at many festivals throughout the world. Producer David<br />

Collins’ credits th<strong>is</strong> year include ‘Cairo Time’ and ‘Little Foxes’, selected for the 2009 Venice<br />

Critics Week. In 2006 Samson <strong>Film</strong>s produced the Oscar-winning musical film ‘Once’.<br />

ROMANIA<br />

• FLYING LESSONS Igor Cobileanski; Saga <strong>Film</strong><br />

Igor Cobileanski has directed and written a number of award-winning short films and<br />

documentaries. ‘Flying Lessons’ <strong>is</strong> h<strong>is</strong> first feature film project. Saga <strong>Film</strong> co-produced a.o.<br />

the 2007 Cannes Palme d’Or winner ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days’ <strong>by</strong> Cr<strong>is</strong>tian Mungiu.<br />

SLOVENIA<br />

• THE STATE OF SHOCK Andrej Košak; Vertigo/Emotionfilm<br />

Košak was screenwriter, director, editor and producer of the full-length feature film<br />

‘Headno<strong>is</strong>e’, the Slovenian entry for the Foreign-language Academy Award in 2003. Producer<br />

Danijel Hočevar represents Slovenia’s first independent film production company. H<strong>is</strong><br />

credits include ‘Slovenian Girl’ <strong>by</strong> Damjan Kozole (2009 Sarajevo, Toronto, Pusan) and ‘I am<br />

from Titov Veles’ <strong>by</strong> Teona Mitevska (2007 Sarajevo, Berlin Panorama, Toronto a.o.)<br />

UNITED KINGDOM<br />

• MY BROTHER THE DEVIL Sally El Hosaini<br />

Egyptian-Welsh writer/director Hosaini’s latest short film, ‘Henna Night’, competed in the<br />

Rotterdam Arab <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> 2009. Her debut feature film, ‘My Brother <strong>The</strong> Devil’, has<br />

been developed through <strong>The</strong> Script Factory, RAWI Sundance Middle-East Screenwriters Lab,<br />

the Sundance International Screenwriters Lab and the Sundance Director's Lab (June 2009).<br />

Sally <strong>is</strong> one of Screen International's UK Stars of Tomorrow 2009.<br />

TURKEY<br />

• COME TO MY VOICE Huseyin Karabey; A-Si <strong>Film</strong><br />

Founded over a decade ago, A-Si <strong>Film</strong> Production <strong>is</strong> an Istanbul-based filmmakers’<br />

collective that has attracted talent from all over the Middle East. In 2006 its co-founder<br />

Hüseyin Karabey made ‘My Marlon and Brando’. Producer Emre Yeksan has worked with<br />

directors such as Semih Kaplanoğlu (‘Süt/Milk’) and Kamen Kalev (Eastern Plays’). In<br />

addition to ‘Come to My Voice’ he <strong>is</strong> currently producing ‘Leaving Together’, Kamen Kalev’s<br />

second feature.<br />
