It then became home tovarious owners until the 18th century, when the house passed through an heiress into theBentinck family and became the main seat of theEarls and Dukes of Portland. In the 1800’s the 5th Duke, who became Duke ofPortland in 1854, had several underground tunnels androoms built, with the tunnels reputed to have totalledseveral miles connecting various underground chambersand above-ground buildings. One tunnel is over onethousand yards long, leading from the house to the ridingschool and wide enough for several people to walk side byside. There is also a 53 metre long underground ballroom.Due to these substantial building projects, approximately15,000 men: masons, bricklayers, joiners and plumberswere employed on the estate, earning the 5th Duke thenickname of ‘the workman’s friend’. Letting people know that‘Bassetlaw is now a Fairtrade Zone’ is high on the agenda as many peopleare still not aware that we have gained this status. While awareness ofthe Fairtrade mark is high - a 2008 survey found 70% of the populationrecognises the FAIRTRADE Mark, up from only 20% in 2002, there is a bitof work to do, to reach these figures in terms of knowing that Bassetlawis a Fairtrade zone. But the action is well underway. Once the certificatesthat acknowledged schools, churches, flagship employers, retailers, cafes, community groups, workplaces were officially presented at BassetlawCouncil offices in March as reported in the last Bassetlaw News, DavidEllis as Coordinator for Flagship employers was ‘on his bike’ to presentcertificates to the Flagship employers A1 Housing, B & Q, Cooperativestores, Wilkinsons who have come on board to support the Fairtrade forBassetlaw campaign. An area with over 100,000 residents must have aflagship employer to meet the Fairtrade criteria.Patient raises £558for breastcare unit,Bassetlaw HospitalEast Markham Primary School pupils are enthusiastic about Fairtradeas a way of putting community cohesion into practiceAs a way of raising a more general public awareness that Bassetlaw isa Fairtrade Zone, the campaign joined in the revelry at Retford CharterDay. Their stall gave consumers a chance to learn about the Fairtradefor Bassetlaw campaign at the same time as tasting chocolate to see ifthey could detect any difference between a Fairtrade and non Fairtradechocolate. But as many consumers commented it’s not the taste that’simportant it’s the fact that producers of Fairtrade cocoa get a better pricefor their product and a premium for their community. It was also obviousto Fairtrade campaigners who helped at the stall that young people werealways the first to recognise the Fairtrade logo.Interestingly, the way the Fairtrade principles are so well known to youngpeople is that many schools are not only offering Fairtrade products at theschool but are including it in the curriculum. East Markham PrimarySchool is one such school amongst others, all listed on the Fairtrade forBassetlaw website.Head teacher, Jeremy Bingham and Chair of Governors, Stuart Eakin at EastMarkham PS recognised that a way to address the ‘Community Cohesion’part of the curriculum was to include activities on Fairtrade.
