This includes Bircotes,Ret<strong>for</strong>d <strong>and</strong> Worksop Leisure Centres<strong>and</strong> Kilton Forest Golf Course.To regular users of <strong>the</strong>se popular leisurevenues, <strong>the</strong>re will be no noticeable changeto normal operations. Customers will stillbe able to benefit from af<strong>for</strong>dable fitnessmembership, swimming lessons, leisureswimming <strong>and</strong> a full great selection offitness classes.The partnership means BPL will exp<strong>and</strong>its leisure portfolio by a third <strong>and</strong> increaseits staff members from 600 to 770, asall 170 staff employed at <strong>the</strong> venues willbe transferred across to BPL under TUPEregulations. This will ensure <strong>the</strong> veryhighest st<strong>and</strong>ard of customer service iscontinued at each site.Cabinet member <strong>for</strong> communityprosperity, Councillor Keith Isard, explains:“BPL has been appointed because of itsexcellent track record in managing <strong>and</strong>operating a diverse range of services,from small community recreationcentres to large regional facilities, suchas <strong>the</strong> Metrodome leisure complex inBarnsley. We feel we have chosen <strong>the</strong> bestpartner <strong>for</strong> this project, with <strong>the</strong> ultimatebeneficiaries being customers using ourleisure venues in this region.”Steve Roberts, head of businessdevelopment <strong>for</strong> BPL, explains: “We aredelighted to be working in partnershipwith <strong>Bassetlaw</strong> District Council to continueto provide an excellent level of service tocustomers at <strong>the</strong>se venues. This is a reallyexciting time <strong>for</strong> our organisation <strong>and</strong>we are looking <strong>for</strong>ward to enhancing <strong>the</strong>services provided to users of <strong>the</strong>se facilities.”Steve continues: “We are really excited<strong>about</strong> <strong>the</strong> opportunity to extend ourpresence into Nottinghamshire. Wesee this as a very positive move, both<strong>for</strong> staff who work at <strong>the</strong> venues <strong>and</strong>customers who use <strong>the</strong>m. There’s nothingbetter than sitting in <strong>the</strong> sun with a cooldrink, having a picnic outdoors, a Sundayafternoon BBQ or a stroll along <strong>the</strong> beach.While <strong>the</strong> sun provides us with a lot ofpleasure, more than 90% of all skincancers are <strong>the</strong> result of exposure to <strong>the</strong>ultraviolet radiation of <strong>the</strong> sun. Here aresome sunsafe tips to help keep you safewhile you have fun in sun.1. Always wear suntan lotion with a highSPF, apply it generously 20 minutesbe<strong>for</strong>e you go out <strong>and</strong>, reapply aftertwo hours2. Pay careful attention to behind <strong>the</strong>knees, behind <strong>the</strong> back, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> tops of<strong>the</strong> feet, ears <strong>and</strong> nose…<strong>the</strong>re’s nothingworse than a bright red sunburned nose!3. Try not to stay out too long in <strong>the</strong> sun,always wear a hat <strong>and</strong> drink plentyof fluids4. Try to avoid <strong>the</strong> sun between 11.00 am<strong>and</strong> 4.00 pm when it is at its strongest<strong>and</strong> cover up5. Cotton <strong>and</strong> linen are excellent fabrics<strong>for</strong> hot wea<strong>the</strong>r – wear loose,light-coloured, lightweight, heatreflectingclothing.6. Hold fabric up to a light bulb to assess itsprotective potential. Material that blocksout <strong>the</strong> light will also shield you from UVrays. If you can see light through a fabric,UV rays can get through, too.7. Do NOT use sunscreens on babiesyounger than 6 months. Instead, usehats, clothing, <strong>and</strong> shading to protectsmall babies from <strong>the</strong> sun. Always reapplysuntan lotion generously<strong>and</strong> frequently on young toddlers<strong>and</strong> children.8. Research shows that sunscreen is mosteffective when applied liberally <strong>and</strong> lefton <strong>the</strong> surface of <strong>the</strong> skin. Do NOT rub itin thoroughly.9. Wearing protective sunglasses willprevent you from having cataracts whenyou grow old.10. If your sunscreen goes past its sell bydate – throw it out!Remember toslip, slop, slap…• Slip on clo<strong>the</strong>s made of a closeweavefabric that cover <strong>the</strong> neck,arms <strong>and</strong> legs.• Slop on a Sun Protection Factor 30+water resistant sunscreen.• Slap on a wide brim hat that covers<strong>the</strong> face, neck <strong>and</strong> ears.fantastic response!Thank you to everyone who hasvolunteered to walk, jog or runin <strong>the</strong> Race <strong>for</strong> Life 2010 atClumber Park on Sunday July 18th.The number of participants in <strong>the</strong> raceis set at a maximum of 3,500 <strong>and</strong> weare pleased to say that this figure hasnow been reached. If you could not joinin <strong>the</strong> race this year, <strong>the</strong>re is always nextyear.
