A <strong>for</strong>m of folk dancingunique to Engl<strong>and</strong>, dancers use sticks, s<strong>word</strong>s,h<strong>and</strong>kerchiefs <strong>and</strong> bells during <strong>the</strong> dancing <strong>and</strong>are often seen on village greens in <strong>and</strong> in towncentres across <strong>the</strong> country.The Nottingham <strong>and</strong> Lincolnshire area can layclaim to being unique in <strong>the</strong> world of Morrisdancing. Rattlejag Morris dancing is local dancetradition based on <strong>the</strong> original North ShiresPlough Jags. The group consists of men <strong>and</strong>women who have revived <strong>and</strong> developed <strong>the</strong>different dance routine to that of traditionalMorris dancers. Rattlejags use a variety of rattles<strong>and</strong> shakers to give each dance its own distinctivesound, while o<strong>the</strong>r dances feature bellsticks towhich long ribbons are attached.Part of <strong>the</strong>ir programme includes three dancesdeveloped by Ret<strong>for</strong>d’s Broadstone Morris <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> group includes many members from Ret<strong>for</strong>dwho can be found practising in <strong>the</strong> Church Hall,Grove Street.Every year Rattlejag Morris dancers per<strong>for</strong>m onMay Day from 5.15 in <strong>the</strong> morning <strong>and</strong> as <strong>the</strong>dawn breaks songs are sung <strong>and</strong> dancing beginsto welcome in <strong>the</strong> long awaited summerMay Day long ago…In <strong>the</strong> past people would go out a-Maying be<strong>for</strong>esunrise in order to ga<strong>the</strong>r flowers <strong>and</strong> greenery todecorate <strong>the</strong>ir houses <strong>and</strong> villages, believing that<strong>the</strong> vegetation spirits would bring good <strong>for</strong>tune.Young girls would wash <strong>the</strong>ir faces in <strong>the</strong> dew of<strong>the</strong> morning to make <strong>the</strong>m beautiful <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> restof <strong>the</strong> year.The highlight of <strong>the</strong> day was <strong>the</strong> crowning of <strong>the</strong>May Queen. There are currently over 30 dedicatedvolunteer drivers who provide journeys tomany older <strong>and</strong> vulnerable people.For fur<strong>the</strong>r in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>about</strong> <strong>the</strong> schemeor becoming a volunteer driver pleasecontact JayneBullock, TransportManager, Ret<strong>for</strong>dAction Centre on01777 709650.Only £60k more needed<strong>for</strong> Kilton Oasis Centre <strong>and</strong>Community Gardens projectThe countdown has begun <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kilton Oasis Centre <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>community gardens gr<strong>and</strong> opening later this year.Extensive fund raising organised by <strong>the</strong> Kilton local church group has sofar raised <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong> sum of £224,000 <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> building of <strong>the</strong> Oasis Centre<strong>and</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r £98,500 <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> park <strong>and</strong> gardens project.
