2.2 DETERMINING EXPOSURE DURATIONNon binding guide to good practice for implementing Directive 2002/44/EC (Vibrations at Work)To assess the daily vibration exposure an estimateis required of the time that the tool operators areexposed to the vibration. Experience has shownthat this is often overestimated during the riskassessment.In this chapter we look at what exposuretime information is needed and how it can bedetermined.Before the daily vibration exposure, A(8), can beestimated, you need to know the total daily durationof exposure to the vibration from each tool or processbeing used. You should be careful to count only the timethat the worker is exposed to vibration; a period when aworker has put the equipment down or is holding it butnot operating it should not be counted.The contact time or trigger time is the time that the handsare actually exposed to the vibration from the tool orworkpiece. The trigger time is often very much shorter thanthe overall “time on the job” and is usually over-estimated byoperators. The method used for estimating triggertimes often depends on whether the toolusage is continuous or intermittent:Continuous tool operation:Example: the use of a grinder toremove large amounts of materialover several hours.Observe work during a representative part of theworking day and record how much of the time the toolis operating. A stopwatch or video recording can beuseful for this.Intermittent tool operation:Example: Use of impact wrench to tighten wheel-nutson vehicles.You may have access to information on the numberof operations that occur during the working day(e.g. the number of components completed perday). If an average duration for an operation isestimated by observing the work rate over a samplework period then the total daily duration can becalculated.For our example of an impact wrench, you mayknow the number of wheels removed and replacedper day and the number of wheel-nuts per wheel, youwill also need to know how long it typically takes toremove or replace one wheel-nut.Work patterns also need careful consideration.For example some workers may onlyuse vibrating tools for certain periods ina day or week.
