In 1945, one year after the lobotomy, Anna’s psychiatristgave an account of a positive development. Anna had becomecalmer and was released into her mother’s care. He wrote:‘The sexual thoughts are still disturbing her, but nowadaysshe is heterosexually inclined. She occupies herself <strong>with</strong>knitting, and the like, but any more substantial capacity forwork is naturally not to be expected, since she is crippled’. Hedescribes Anna as better corresponding to a desired form offemininity, which is constructed in interaction <strong>with</strong> her age,marital status, and social class – as unmarried and relativelyyoung, she resides in her mother’s home; she is heterosexualbut sexually abstinent; and her work and duties are suitablyinclined.The following year Anna’s condition is more in doubt. For aperiod of time she was readmitted and once again treated <strong>with</strong>insulin due to her sexual obsession. The psychiatrist reports thatAnna still lives <strong>with</strong> her mother and that she ‘feels rather calm,but disturbed by a certain fixation that she has towards a ladyamong her acquaintances. Altogether, the patient is satisfied <strong>with</strong>her operation’.In the last report in 1948, the psychiatrist writes that Annahas been admitted a few more times and has been given insulinfor her anxiety and depression. Compared to her pre-lobotomy,Anna’s condition has not ameliorated. He sums up her status:Still has passive homosexual feelings for various women in hersurroundings, and is pained by these. On the other hand no feelingsfor men. Objectively, the patient seems to be considerably calmer thanbefore surgery, but is periodically anxious and goes back to the hospital.As earlier, rather roundabout, fastidious, and dull.Thus, he once again describes Anna as less adequate comparedto the norm, as yet again further from the basic requirements ofnormalcy.Anna’s life- and patient history coincides <strong>with</strong> the overridingchanges that took place concerning (homo)sexuality, and58
