Mr. James proudly served his country as a Sargent in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a very family orientedman, who enjoyed being with his, grandchildren and great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John, Paul and Luke James, two sisters, Naomi Hillierd and Clota Gray and granddaughter, Skye D’Anne Eaton. The DentonCounty SWCD stated theyare honored to work withoutstanding conservationistssuch as Dan Reding asthey continue to conserveand preserve our naturalresources for future generations.Dan Reding was raisedin North Eastern DentonCounty until 1960, when hisfamily moved to the GribbleSprings area near Sanger.He graduated from DentonHigh school in 1963, andthen from Texas TechnologicalCollege in 1967 with aB.S. in agricultural education.While at college, Danmet Betty Gregory fromSpur, TX and they weremarried in 1967 followingtheir graduation.Betty is a retired educatorthat most recently taught6th-7th grade science. Danand Betty raised two boyson the ranch in Sanger;Greg and Mac. Dan hasbeen a participating cooperatorof the Denton CountySWCD since 1971 when hisfirst conservation plan waswritten.The Denton CountySWCD presentation highlightedseveral of his workingslisted below:Since Dan’s first conservationplan, he has constructed10 livestock waterponds. He’s planted EasternGamagrass, located in amoist, low lying area at theDan Reding accepts his award.mouth of a newly constructedpit-pond, which he is eagerto increase his stand ofEastern Gamagrass and testits protein content as soonas he can harvest it.One of the many improvedgrasses Dan hasplanted over the years isKleingrass. This species isadapated well to the tightsoils of Denton County, andrequires significantly lessfertilizer input as comparedto other improved grasses.One of Dan’s favoriteconservation practices is toplant Yucchi Clover intoCoastal Bermuda in theBetty and Dan Redingwinter time for additionalforage and increased plantvigor.Dan has planted PlainsBluestem in some pasturesto introduce a variety of forageto his livestock.In the last year, he hasbeen using no-till techniquesin his ranching operation. Ithas proven to be cost effectiveand very conservationfriendly. Dan is spreadinghis use of no-till planting toother fields, and is planningto plant cover crops in orderto enhance the soil healthand plant productivity.Dan has constructedDan Reding’s mesquite kill in the summer of 2011 was the largest in Denton County that theconservation office has participated in.
