Academic RegulationsAttendance PolicyStudent ExpectationsSRSS students are expected to attend class regularly and punctually and to make the most of educational opportunities through active classroom participation. They are expected to be prepared for class by completing all required work and bringing all necessary materials. Course Selection and Course ChangesEach spring, students will select the courses they wish to take the following year. This is done in consultation with teachers, parents, and guidance counselors. After the start of the semester, all course changes, additions, or deletions must be made through the Guidance office and with a parent signature. Switching or adding courses will only be possible during the first 6-‐day cycle of the semester. Academic HonestySRSS expects all students to complete tests, exams and assignments as evidence of their own learning. As such, all work must be a student’s own work. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. If a student is found to have cheated or plagiarized, parents will be contacted and the incident will be documented in the student’s file. There will be disciplinary measures taken such as a loss of privileges at the school for the student, or detentions. The student will redo the work honestly and there will be a deduction of marks for academic dishonesty. Assignments and TestsStudents are expected to complete all work that is assigned. Notebooks and other forms of written work should be neat and well organized. Incomplete assignments and mediocre work habits usually result in hindered learning. Students cannot expect to have tests or due dates changed due to being unprepared. In the event of illness or extenuating circumstances, exceptions can be made by contacting the subject teacher. Exams and Year-End AssessmentsAll exams and year-‐end assessments are mandatory for every student. There are no exemptions. Students are expected to write their exams on the date they are scheduled. Exceptions for special circumstances can be granted by the principals. Regular punctual attendance is one of the most significant indicators of learning. If students miss class, they are missing instruction, practice, and assessment of the curriculum. Student grades are based on achievement of outcomes; in some cases, the process of learning is the outcome being assessed, so attendance is critical to the achievement of credit. To help students to be successful, we monitor attendance and make regular contact with the home. We ask students to be responsible for their attendance and invite parents/guardians to make arrangements with us in advance of all planned events that take students away from their education. We will make daily calls home to inform parents/guardians of late arrival or absence from class. When poor attendance interferes with consistent demonstration of the outcomes we follow this protocol: 1. Teachers communicate with the student that a change is needed in order to successfully demonstrate achievement of outcomes. 2. Teachers communicate with parents. 3. Principals/guidance counselors will meet with the concerned parties to implement intervention strategies. Parents should call the school to provide reason for any student absence. Students are responsible for demonstrating that they have achieved the outcomes covered during their absence. By Manitoba law, students are required to attend school up to the age of 18. If necessary, the HSD Truancy Officer will investigate absences.Report CardsReport cards are issued at the middle and end of each semester. Mid-‐term report cards are issued in November and April, and final report cards in February and June. Following each mid-‐semester report, parents will be invited to discuss their student’s progress with staff. Students will be evaluated on the basis of their term work, including assignments, projects, tests, skill development, and teacher observations. The “Student Achievement Report” indicates the mark received, teacher comments, and attendance in each subject. A transcript of school marks isan official copy of a student’smarks required by most postsecondaryinstitutions.TranscriptsUpon graduation, students receive one free official transcript of all marks achieved in the school. If the student requires more transcripts, they may be obtained upon request from the school office for a fee of $5.00 per copy to be paid when the request for the transcript is made. 1314 SRSS Handbook 2013-1414 SRSS Handbook 2013 SRSS - 2014 Handbook 2013-14 15
