<strong>School</strong> <strong>Policies</strong>Students expect that…• They will be treated consistently and fairly; • Clear, relevant lessons are presented, along with explanations for the evaluation procedures to be used in each course; • They will be able to work in a school environment which safe, secure, non-­threatening and conducive to their satisfaction in learning; • <strong>School</strong> personnel will be accessible to students for extra help concerning courses, assignments, remedial assistance, personal and career decisions, and other school matters; • Teachers will maintain order and discipline in their classrooms and will provide explanations for any disciplinary action; • Teachers will prepare for class and mark and return assignments promptly; • <strong>School</strong> principals will ensure that students receive proper instruction in the school; • They will be able to participate in the wide range of activities offered in the school; • Staff will treat them in a courteous and respectful manner; • Support staff will help create a positive learning environment. Students should…• Attend school regularly and punctually; • Be prepared for all classes by bringing required materials and completing homework assignments; • Complete work missed in classes due to absence; • Develop self-­‐discipline and show courtesy for all people in the school and in the community; students should use appropriate language; • Make the most of educational opportunities through active classroom participation and involvement in other school activities both in and out of class; • Take pride in their work, their appearance and what they have accomplished; • Resolve interpersonal conflicts and difficulties through discussions with the other person or through seeking assistance from school personnel; • Take pride in their respective schools within Hanover and help foster this feeling in other students; • Show respect for school property and the personal belongings of others. The HSD Freedom fromHarassment Policycan be found athttp://www.srss.ca/policies/harassment.pdfAlcohol and Illicit Drug UsePossession, use of or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not permitted under any circumstances for anyone while under the authority of the school, in attendance or upon returning to school, or during school related co-­‐curricular participation or attendance. Violation will involve communication with parents, a referral to an addictions counselor (AFM), and mandatory suspension from school. Police involvement and a recommendation to the school board for expulsion from school are also possible consequences. Conduct to and from <strong>School</strong>Students are under the school’s jurisdiction going to and leaving the school. Therefore, students are subject to school regulations concerning general conduct. This includes adhering to all bus rules as stated by the student’s bus driver. Dress CodeStudents are expected to dress appropriately with respect to personal health, hygiene, respect for self and others, and within the appropriate guidelines of the local culture. The intent of the guidelines listed is to help develop and protect the safety, self-­‐confidence, self respect and self esteem of all people who attend the <strong>SRSS</strong>. Students in violation of any of the following policies will be asked to change their dress accordingly: 1. Students will be dressed in some form of footwear, as bare feet are a health hazard in a public building. 2. Clothing and accessories that may be offensive or degrading to others is prohibited. Eg: alcohol use, use of drugs, violence, profanity, gangs, prejudice, sexism, obscene pictures, racism 3. Revealing clothing and bare midriffs are not acceptable. 4. Exposed undergarments are not acceptable. These guidelines are representative but not exhaustive. Teachers and principals will make the final determination on what constitutes appropriate attire. Students who come to school dressed inappropriately will be asked to remedy the situation by changing into different attire. If the problem persists, parents or guardians will be contacted by the principals. FightingFighting and other aggressive behaviors are deemed inappropriate to good school conduct and are subject to disciplinary measure. Fighting will result in school suspension. To avoid any misunderstanding, students are encouraged to follow a “hands-­‐off” policy. Harassment <strong>SRSS</strong> affirms its commitment to maintain a learning environment that is free from harassment at all times supports the dignity and self-­‐esteem of individuals. Harassment of any individual will not be tolerated. <strong>SRSS</strong> will follow the HSD Freedom from Harassment Policy as outlined on the HSD website. Hazing and InitiationInitiation activities or hazing that involves bullying will not be tolerated. Hazing involving physical assault will result in a minimum 5-­‐day suspension issued by the school’s principals and a police report will be filed. This suspension may be extended by the Superintendent or raised to an expulsion by the Board.
