Spray HeadsFixed spray heads may be used for almost any type of landscape planting– from turf and ground cover to shrub beds and planters. The shorterradius (5-17 ft.) of lawn and shrub fixed spray heads make for a high levelof control for over-spray, but their relatively short radius also limits theirusefulness to smaller areas. Spray heads typically have flow rates of up to5-1/2 GPM or more. This high flow rate restricts the use of the heads torelatively level areas to prevent runoff.Stream spray heads provide a slightly larger radius. Stream spray headshave been successfully used on gentle slopes because the GPM is slightlylower, while the radius is slightly larger, reducing the risk of run-off.Caution should be exercised when using stream spray heads in shrub bedsbecause shrub branches can block the relatively small spray streams. The pressures for most spray heads range from 15 to 50 PSI. Particularattention should be paid to situations with excess pressure, which producessevere misting and poor water distribution.SprinklerTypeShrub - FixedSprayPSSRSPro-SprayI-SprayTypicalUsesInstalled onStationary risersfor use in shrubbeds, groundcover areas oron slopes.GeneralCharacteristics Advantages DisadvantagesFixed spray head on riserwithout pop-upcapability - typicallymade of plastic.Provides the abilityto install on fixedriser above theplant material. Not recommended for areaswith pedestrian trafficbecause of tripping hazard.Small radius typically limitsuse to smaller areas.Pop-upFixed SprayPSSRSPro-SprayI-SprayWidely used forturf, groundcover, andshrub beds.Pop-up capabilityranging from 2” to 12” -typically made of plastic.Pops up above turfand ground covers.Pop-up heads nowcommonly usedanywhere foottraffic is a concernsuch as nearwalkways.Gravity retraction or lightweight retraction springs onsome brands may cause headsto stick in up position.
