Also consider the predominantwind directions when choosing sites forcontrol rooms <strong>and</strong> worker rest areas.Table 3 lists information on some of themanufacturers, operators, <strong>and</strong> contractorsof fixed-facility incineration <strong>and</strong> air-curtainburning systems.Make a spill response plan, <strong>and</strong> providefor equipment <strong>and</strong> secondary containment foron-site fuel storage.Flashers or signs attached to fences <strong>and</strong> barrierswill be needed to alert approaching travelersof the impending traffic-control points.ThermalConsider important issues related to h<strong>and</strong>ling,storage, <strong>and</strong> conveyance of carcasses tothe incineration or burning site as described inthe “General Considerations” chapter of thisguide.For large numbers of animal carcasses(those with a cumulative weight of more than1 million pounds), conduct the thermal destructionoperations at a distance of 2 miles (3kilometers) from residential buildings, roads,<strong>and</strong> utilities (wires/lines). Air-curtain burning<strong>and</strong> open-air burning operations should alsobe conducted 2 miles from public, religious,historical, <strong>and</strong> archaeological areas.If possible, consider establishing the samedistance from crop fields <strong>and</strong> wildlife. Thiswill protect the public from smoke inhalation<strong>and</strong> excessive heat <strong>and</strong> prevent fire damage toproperty, plants, <strong>and</strong> wildlife.90
