Uplands Initiative – <strong>Banc</strong> y <strong>Celyn</strong> 20083.3 Medieval and Post Medieval Settlements and AgriculturePrior to this project, there were only two medieval or post medieval settlement sitesrecorded in the NMR for the <strong>Banc</strong> y <strong>Celyn</strong> study area. These were;• Cwmhindda Deserted Rural Settlement - NPRN 275640• Hendy, Long Hut I - NPRN 275641Both of these sites are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The Cwmhindda DRS includedseveral platforms and long huts and an enclosure (NPRNs 247056-247061), whilst theHendy Long Hut also had an associated enclosure (NPRN 247414).Records for 9 medieval or post medieval settlement sites could also be identified in theregional HER, held by the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust, which had beenincluded in the Cadw grant-aided Deserted Rural Settlements project undertaken in thearea (CPAT, 2000). These sites were;• Pant y Llyn Hill, Earthwork Platform II - NPRN 247046 (PRN 80011)• Cwmhindda, Long Hut I - NPRN 247058 (PRN 33960)• Cwmhindda, Long Hut II - NPRN 247059 (PRN 33961)• Cwmhindda, Earthwork Platform III - NPRN 247061 (PRN 80009)• <strong>Banc</strong> y <strong>Celyn</strong>, Long Hut - NPRN 247074 (PRN 33963)• Waun Hirwaun, Earthwork Platform II - NPRN 247139 (PRN 80015)• Pant y Llyn, Building - NPRN 247277 (PRN 9250)• Pant y Llyn, Farmstead - NPRN 247281 (PRN 33962)• Hendy, Long Hut I - NPRN 275641 (PRN 80014)Of the sites recorded in the regional HER, the Hendy Long Hut and the CwmhinddaLong Huts I and II are protected as Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The latter form partof the scheduled Cwmhindda Deserted Rural Settlement (NPRN 275640), whichincludes of several other features, as is shown in section 3.3.1 below.The record for settlement has been significantly boosted by this project, with thediscovery of new longhouse, long hut and platform sites, predominantly at the northernend of the study area (see Figure 9, p.55). A significant number of earthwork banks,areas of cultivation and other minor features have also been recorded, in associationwith the settlements of the area. However, unlike other upland areas surveyed by theauthors of this report in recent years, there is a virtual absence of ancillary shelters, pensand folds in association with the settlement sites.43
