Uplands Initiative – <strong>Banc</strong> y <strong>Celyn</strong> 20083.6 Boundary StonesA series of parish boundaries run through the <strong>Banc</strong> y <strong>Celyn</strong> study area. The parishes ofGwenddwr and Crickadarn, to the west, are part of the Glanusk estate. They border theparishes of Merthyr Cynog and Llangynog to the east, and this boundary is marked by aseries of 14 boundary stones, most of which bear the initials “JB” and “G”. Theseletters clearly stand for Joseph Bailey of Glanusk (1783-1858).Sir Joseph Bailey was an ironmaster and a nephew of the Crawshay family of CyfarthfaCastle, Merthyr Tydfil. Having made his fortune in industry, Joseph Bailey boughtextensive lands in mid-Wales, including Glanusk Park. From 1830 onwards, he lived atGlanusk, effectively retiring from active management of his ironworks. He was to serveas the MP for Worcester and later Brecon. His son Joseph died young and the Glanuskestate passed to his grandson, Sir Joseph Russell Bailey, when Joseph Bailey I died in1858.It seems likely that the stones date to the lifetime of the first Joseph Bailey, as his sondid not live to gain his inheritance and his grandson, Joseph Russell Bailey, is likely tohave used the initials JRB. It is not difficult to imagine that Bailey sought to establishhis estate boundaries early on in his occupation of Glanusk; therefore it is quite likelythat the boundary stones date to the second quarter of the 19 th century.Plate 41: Boundary stone NPRN 247015.
