Dear Broadcaster and Media Specialist:Our latest edition of the <strong>Vincennes</strong> <strong>University</strong> Graduate <strong>Bulletin</strong> features recent graduatesfrom the VU Electronic Media-<strong>Broadcasting</strong> Department. This edition includes thosegraduating in May, August, or December <strong>2012</strong>.This Graduate <strong>Bulletin</strong>, along with previous editions, can be accessed on-line by visiting theVU Electronic Media-<strong>Broadcasting</strong> website at www.vinu.edu/electronicmediaOur electronic media students have extensive training in audio and video production; sales;and writing for radio, television, web and social networks. Our students receive hands-ontraining in the studios beginning with their first week of classes as freshmen.<strong>2012</strong> was a great year for the Electronic Media-<strong>Broadcasting</strong> Department. The WVUBNews Department was recognized by the IBA for Best Radio Newscast and Best BreakingNews Story. Later in the year, they were also recognized by the Society of BroadcastJournalists for Best Spot News Story for another story in the community. WVUT hasadded a camera jib and Steadicam to its production facilities, and continues to be active inmany local productions utilizing our students as crew members.This year the E-Media department became an Avid Learning Partner. Students graduatingthis spring were members of the first class to have the opportunity to earn their Avid MediaComposer 6 User Certification. Our students can also earn their RAB Radio MarketingProfessional Certification.WVUB radio operates with three HD channels and WVUT operates two televisionchannels, one in HD and one in SD, for PBS and local programming. Our graduates haveexperience working for these stations.VU Electronic Media-<strong>Broadcasting</strong> students are employed throughout Indiana and in manymarkets around the country, including the national networks. Some, after working in theindustry have returned to education to train future members of the media.I hope you will take a look at this year’s graduates and consider them for employmentat your company. Video ProductionStudents in the Electronic Media program gain video production skills through structurededucational experiences and the production of programming created for WVUT-HD.Through the combination of staff and students, WVUT-TV 22 produces more hours oflocal production than most public television stations. This could not be accomplishedwithout staff and students working together to complete daily tasks and goals. Studentsare crew members for a nightly newscast, sports remotes, public affairs programs, andother productions throughout the year.Students have access to high definition studio and field equipment, including twenty-fourAVID editing suites.18


WVUT-HDWVUT-HD is <strong>Vincennes</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s PBS affiliate serving Southwestern Indiana andSoutheastern Illinois through the combined efforts of staff and students. Students areinvolved daily in all operations of the station.A daily 30 minute newscast is produced by students and staff. This newscast isbroadcast live at 5:00 pm and re-broadcast at 11:30 pm. This newscast has beenpresented with a Spectrum Award for Best TV Newscast in the non-commercial TVcategory, by the Indiana Broadcasters Association. Students anchor the news, sports, andweather; shoot and edit stories; switch and direct; and operate all equipment necessaryfor the production. WVUT-HD is the first public digital television station to go on-air inIndiana, broadcasting a high definition and standard definition schedule daily on HD1 andHD2. Studio and remote productions are in broadcast high definition.WVUT also produces “22 Magazine,” a public affairs magazine program. Students workin production crew positions as studio camera operators, Chyron graphics operators,TelePrompTer operators, audio operators, video recorder operators, and photographersshooting high definition B-roll video. WVUT operates an HD channel for PBSprogramming, and a separate SD channel with programming for PBS Create and theIndiana Channel.19


Audio/Radio ProductionIn addition to three radio stations, there are eight audio production studios that containa variety of professional audio production equipment. In the VU tradition of “hands-on”training, students learn to operate every piece of audio equipment in every studio.Students are required to use these studios for various projects. From our digital audioconsoles to our “Adobe Audition” audio editing software, students learn and practice onthe latest audio equipment. The Electronic Media/<strong>Broadcasting</strong> Department faculty andstaff work directly with students in both formal and scheduled lab situations.20


WVUB-Blazer 91.1 HD91.1, WVUB-HD is a Hot Adult Contemporary/Contemporary Hit Radio 50,000 wattPublic Radio Station. WVUB is affiliated with the National Public Radio and AmericanPublic Radio networks. These affiliations provide our listeners with the most up todate information and enable WVUB to provide quality programming to a wide base oflisteners. WVUB broadcasts in HD, allowing two more signals on the same frequency.WVUB-HD-2 is Blazer Cool Jazz with NPR news, and WVUB-HD-3 is Blazer Bilingue,the only Indiana radio station south of Indianapolis broadcasting in the Spanish language.WVUB is proud to have won the Indiana Broadcasters Association Indiana Public RadioStation of the Year in 2008-2009, and to have won the coveted Community ServiceActivity of the Year award during the IBA Spectrum Awards ceremony in 2009-2010.Students assist professional staff on WVUB. They are supervised and trained bybroadcasting faculty and staff who have strong backgrounds in the commercial industry.On-air performance, improving communication skills, and keeping the audienceentertained and informed are just some of the goals students work toward when on-airwith WVUB.21


Student Internet RadioK-NOW streams live from the <strong>Vincennes</strong> <strong>University</strong> Website at www.vinu.edu. K-NOWfeatures a Contemporary Current Hits format. K-NOW is operated and programmedby a mix of first and second year students as they learn how to operate a radio stationfrom the ground up, including learning to work with a digital automation system. Theexperience mirrors a real world progression of skills and training as closely as is possiblein an academic setting. All of the station operations are conducted under the direction andsupervision of faculty.22


RemotesA variety of radio and television remotes are produced with students each year,ranging from men’s and women’s college basketball, political debates, electionreturns and Meet Your Legislator, to the Miss <strong>Vincennes</strong> <strong>University</strong> ScholarshipProgram (winner of the Indiana Public <strong>Broadcasting</strong> “Best Performance Award”), andthe VU Commencement ceremony.These major remotes utilize a 4-5 camera High Definition remote production fly-awaypackage, which WVUT utilizes for major remotes. Studios are also located in the RedSkelton Performing Arts Theater and the <strong>Vincennes</strong> <strong>University</strong> basketball complex.23


MultimediaThe Multimedia Communications program at <strong>Vincennes</strong> <strong>University</strong> is designed toprepare students for successful entry into the career field of their choice. Multimediais the creative union of graphics, animation, audio, video, and text, used to produce aninformative, eye-catching, audio-visual computer based presentation. Students willcombine artistic ability with technical proficiency to design and create multimediaproducts.Students will work on skills that can be adapted to fit a variety of situations. With thecontinuing changes in technology and the business world, people with the flexibilityof multiple skill areas are more likely to make progress in their careers. Students willtake a series of skill building courses needed to effectively operate in a computermedia environment. They will take a set of core courses that includes audio-videoproduction, photography, web page development, graphic design, computer aidedpublishing, multimedia production, and broadcast writing.Students will choose one area of emphasis from the five emphasis areas offered tocompliment the core skill courses and provide expertise in a specific career area. The fiveareas to choose from include Graphic Design, Marketing/Advertising, Electronic Media/<strong>Broadcasting</strong>, Music-Audio Recording, and Computer Web Technology. Each emphasisarea has required courses to build specific skills and knowledge.At <strong>Vincennes</strong> <strong>University</strong>, we firmly believe in the value of hands-on, real worldexperience for students. The Multimedia Communications program is a time intensivecourse of study. An internship or capstone project is required for all MultimediaCommunication majors. We stress the importance of good job habits and developing astrong personal presentation so students can get where they want to go in their careers.24


Media SalesIn sales classes, radio, television, internet, and cable selling techniques are presentedand practiced. The successful Electronic Media/<strong>Broadcasting</strong> sales student hasa working knowledge of Arbitron and Nielsen rating techniques and uses; local,regional, and national selling differences; and direct and agency selling skills.Students who successfully complete their sales courses will be eligible to take theRadio Marketing Professional exam and become certified by the Radio AdvertisingBureau. <strong>Vincennes</strong> <strong>University</strong> Electronic Media/<strong>Broadcasting</strong> department is the onlyuniversity program in the country partnering with the RAB in this manner.25
