6Founder’s MessageI have been privileged to haveour supportive clients, ourhardworking and effectivedirectors, our capable andresponsible staff. We haveachieved so much together, andwith its dedicated leadershipand its strength and competenceI am fully confident that thepractice will continue to achieveeven more in the future.I am extremely excited that Rider Levett Bucknallis celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year inHong Kong. After 36 years with Rider Levett Bucknall, I retiredfrom the practice in 1999.50 years is a very long time. The practice wasestablished before many of you were born, butlooking back over the years and remembering howthings used to be it seems hardly any time at all.The years have passed by so quickly. We could not have built our practice without thehardwork, care and deep sense of responsibility ofour staff, past and present, both technical andsupportive. It has always been sad to lose staff, buthappily we now have a very large number of RiderLevett Bucknall old boys and girls throughout allsectors of the property and construction industryin Hong Kong and China who still retain happymemories of the time spent with us during theirtraining, and who remain good friends. When I look at us now, 1500 staff in 20 offices inHong Kong and China, my mind goes back towhere it all started. Just 8 of us in two rooms inYun Ping Road, Causeway Bay. This was a longtime ago but I remember it all very clearly asthough it were yesterday. We have come a long wayfrom those modest beginnings. Thanks, therefore,to our clients who have always supported us.Thanks also to our directors, deputy directors, associate directors, associates and staff, the firmhas grown from strength to strength until we arenow one of the largest firms of quantity surveyorsin the world. At the time Rider Levett Bucknall was establishedthe quantity surveying profession was hardlyrecognised and accepted in Hong Kong. Theprivate practice firms were just hanging on by theirfinger tips, and two out of the first five firmspracticing here had to close down through lack ofbusiness.Since then the quantity surveyors, through caringabout their clients and striving to provide themwith a high quality service, have built up theprofession so that now it is fully accepted, and thequantity surveyor is looked upon as an essentialmember of the client's team. The firm has always been a major part of my life, demanding long hours, hard work and persistencein promoting quantity surveying services to clientsand architects which was very hard in the earlydays. I have always been very proud of our practiceand its people, and it has given me a deep sense ofsatisfaction to see us grow stronger and moreinfluential over the years.I have been privileged to have our supportiveclients, our hardworking and effective directors, our capable and responsible staff. We haveachieved so much together, and with its dedicatedleadership and its strength and competence I amfully confident that the practice will continue toachieve even more in the future.Denis G. Levett

102010Frank CheukRetired as Quantity Surveyor in 1985 I am extremely honoured to be invited to RiderLevett Bucknall’s 50th anniversary party after 27years of absence. I am also very humbled to berecognised, still, as the company’s No. 1 staff. There were many memorable events in my dayswith Levett and Bailey, but one of the mostunforgettable ones was the riots in 1967. Almostall construction jobs were terminated and all thestaff had their wages frozen. Fortunately, underthe tremendous leadership of Mr. Levett and Mr.Bailey, the company recovered within a year. Levettand Bailey had continued to prosper since and thecompany had grown to a staff of 250 by 1985.I hereby sincerely wish Rider Levett Bucknall’scontinuous success and excellence in the quantitysurveying profession.

I met thetwo founders of the firm, the late Mr. David A.Bailey and Mr. Denis G. 21Alan ParryRetired as Director in 2002Eighteen years of my life were spent at Levett andBailey. They were memorable in many respectsand encompassed hard work, great colleagues, prestigious projects and enjoyable social activities.First the projects. I had the good fortune to beinvolved with some landmark developmentsincluding: Hongkong Bank (HSBC), CityPolytechnic (now City University), Happy ValleyRacecourse and Football Club Redevelopment(RHKJC), Festival Walk Shopping Mall and Offices,Hong Kong Institute of Education and Air CargoTerminal at Chek Lap Kok (HACTL). I doubt I wouldhave worked on projects of such size andimportance had I stayed in the UK.My colleagues and the staff generally at Levett andBailey were first class. Being one of the few“gweilos” in a staff of over 300 I always feltwelcome and at home in what was an extremelyhard working organisation. When I became apartner I received unstinting support from my twoassociates and secretary, Patrick Chan, Lam YenLing and Kimmy Chow for which I will always begrateful. They were years of hard work which I nowlook back upon with a sense of pride in what I hopepeople consider “jobs” well done. The social side of Levett and Bailey for me wasmostly football and sports days although the staffdinners, get together and cocktail parties werealso enjoyable. 22Maya WongSecretary to Denis Levett until 1989Winnie WongNow Head of Typing Section (Hong Kong)I first joined Levett and Bailey back in 1980. I wasworking at the Secretarial Section; shortly after Ibecame personal secretary to Mr. Denis Levett.Wai Suk, which was the way everyone called Mr.Levett in Cantonese during our times and evennow is well known to all L&B staff. It was really aclose way to greet him. I am sure he understoodwhy everyone gave him that name.I remembered replying to incoming phone callswas Mr. Levett’s top priority, no matter how late, before leaving the office. He mentioned that eachphone call was important to him and he did notwant to miss any opportunity of speaking with aclient or an architect.I reckon that some of the staff had a fear to meethim and talk to him as the Senior Partner of thepractice. They had an impression that Mr. Levettwas a furious man; on the contrary he was a verynice man. During the economic downturn in1982/83, when the construction industry shrunk,Mr. Levett told me that he had over a hundredfamilies to support, that meant he was thinking ofall the staff who was working with him. I felt reallyproud and honoured to have a boss who was soconsiderate.L&B Hong Kong staff working with word processors in the early 1980s
