21Alan ParryRetired as Director in 2002Eighteen years of my life were spent at Levett andBailey. They were memorable in many respectsand encompassed hard work, great colleagues,prestigious projects and enjoyable social activities.First the projects. I had the good fortune to beinvolved with some landmark developmentsincluding: Hongkong Bank (HSBC), CityPolytechnic (now City University), Happy ValleyRacecourse and Football Club Redevelopment(RHKJC), Festival Walk Shopping Mall and Offices,Hong Kong Institute of Education and Air CargoTerminal at Chek Lap Kok (HACTL). I doubt I wouldhave worked on projects of such size andimportance had I stayed in the UK.My colleagues and the staff generally at Levett andBailey were first class. Being one of the few“gweilos” in a staff of over 300 I always feltwelcome and at home in what was an extremelyhard working organisation. When I became apartner I received unstinting support from my twoassociates and secretary, Patrick Chan, Lam YenLing and Kimmy Chow for which I will always begrateful. They were years of hard work which I nowlook back upon with a sense of pride in what I hopepeople consider “jobs” well done.The social side of Levett and Bailey for me wasmostly football and sports days although the staffdinners, get together and cocktail parties werealso enjoyable. When I arrived in Hong Kong it wasto work on the Hongkong Bank project and footballmatches were soon arranged against the otherfirms participating in the project. Francis Fan wasthe “football man” at Levett and Bailey and it waswith his assistance that the games were arrangedat the Jubilee Sports Centre in Shatin. I continuedto play in Levett and Bailey football matchesthroughout my time at the firm although it wasdisappointing that we never managed to win theannual RICS Football Tournament while I wasplaying.I also enjoyed participating in the annual sports daywhich evolved from an Levett and Bailey only eventto one involving Swire Properties, P & T and JRP.My tussles with Nick Brooke in the 1500 and 3000metres were events I always looked forward to.I have great memories of Levett and Bailey andhope that Rider Levett Bucknall has a successfuland prosperous future so that today’s twentysomethings will also have great memories whenthey retire.A football match between staff teams in the late 1970s
