Currentresearch in the laboratory is focused on the contribution <strong>of</strong> the innate immune response to retrovirus-inducedneurological disease, with a concentration on the involvement <strong>of</strong> proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines andtoll-like receptors. Experimental procedures in the laboratory include real-time PCR, RNAse Protection Assayand in situ hybridization analysis <strong>of</strong> gene expression, the use <strong>of</strong> retroviral vectors and neural stem cells for in vivogene expression, and the use <strong>of</strong> knockout mice to study the contribution <strong>of</strong> specific genes during retroviralneuropathogenesis.Daniel J. His approach to research is toanswer questions relating to problems that are encountered relating to surgical techniques or approaches bylooking at the application <strong>of</strong> human surgical techniques or instrumentation to equine surgery.Dr. Burba also has an interest in equine arthritis, specifically medications used in its treatment. This may includepharmacokinetics as well as interactions.18
