Project AreaThe main beneficiaries of this project are resident in the East End, Efford/Laira areas of Plymouth. The social housing stock here is predominately pre 1950 and the areas are typical inner city estateswhere there is significant social deprivation and ‘elder isolation’The project rationale was based experience of providing support in the areas over a 3 year periodinformed by consultation conducted by the City Council’s Estate Regeneration teams and the PublicHealth Delivery Unit. Both consultations identified a desire by older residents to take part in thetype of exercise delivered by this project.Project design and deliveryThe Tai Chi classes have been specifically developed for the elderly and are suitable for able bodiedand armchair/wheelchair participation, and they will compliment and help develop our existingactivities in these areas. The activities are not delivered in isolation – they are part of established‘drop in’ sessions managed by a project worker and volunteers that provides general advice andcompanionship.InputsThe budget for the Initial Grant was £13,584 over three years. The Second Grant was £4800 overone year. The total grant over the period was £18,384. Over the period of the grant the Elder Treeprovided match funding of £1780 a year for the Initial Grant and £3355 for the Second Grant. Thetotal match funding from the Elder Tree was £8695.ActivitiesThe Initial Grant funded two activities; a weekly Fitness Classfor older residents in the East End of Plymouth and access tothe older adult sessions at the community swimming pool atPlympton. The swimming initiative was innovative as prior tothe introduction of the service, beneficiaries would havedepended on public transport which requires a change of buson each direction of the journey and a long walk for some toand from the bus stop. Under the project, they are nowcollected by Plymouth Disability Federation transport that hasbeen optimised for use by the elderly and disabled whichmeans they can attend throughout the year. The Second Grant has funded two weekly Tai Chi classes heldin Efford and the East End.124 SWWB Final Evaluation Report
