appendix 1Appendix 1: <strong>Social</strong> Insurance and <strong>Social</strong> AssistanceThe Department of <strong>Social</strong> Protecti<strong>on</strong> provides a range of payments which can be classif<strong>ie</strong>d as follows.<strong>Social</strong> InsurancePayments made under the social insurance system are funded, in part, by c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s from employers, employees andthe self-employed. Any deficit in the fund is met by Exchequer subventi<strong>on</strong>. Entitlement to social insurance benefits isc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>al up<strong>on</strong> the claimants having a certain number of c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s paid or credited in a specific period of time.The c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s vary according to the different insurance schemes.<strong>Social</strong> Insurance schemes comprise State Pensi<strong>on</strong> (C<strong>on</strong>tributory), State Pensi<strong>on</strong> (Transiti<strong>on</strong>), Widow/er’s (C<strong>on</strong>tributory)Pensi<strong>on</strong>, Guardian’s Payment (C<strong>on</strong>tributory), Deserted Wife’s Benefit, Invalidity Pensi<strong>on</strong>, Illness Benefit, DisablementPensi<strong>on</strong>, Carer’s Benefit, Jobseeker’s Benefit, Maternity Benefit, Health and Safety Benefit, Adoptive Benefit, TreatmentBenefit, Widowed Parent Grant, Bereavement Grants and Household Benefits and Free Travel.<strong>Social</strong> Assistance102<strong>Social</strong> Assistance schemes are financed entirely by the Exchequer.
