<strong>The</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Property</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> | <strong>2012</strong>ACT DivisionIn <strong>2012</strong> Paul Powderley was resoundingly re-elected President of the ACT Division of<strong>The</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Property</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> for a second term. His energy and commitment areacknowledged and appreciated by the ACT Divisional Council.<strong>The</strong> ACT Divisional Council produced anotherbudget surplus and with input from variousAPI Committee members, the CPD Committeearranged interesting and informative industryevents providing API members and non memberswith good networking opportunities.After 24 years of involvement with <strong>The</strong><strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Property</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> and Divisional Council,Richard Swinbourne, Life Member retired from theCouncil. <strong>The</strong> API and the ACT Divisional Councilhave appreciated and benefitted greatly from hiscontribution.<strong>The</strong> ACT Division also give thanks to the hardworking CPD Committee, ACT Divisional Counciland Cathy Sirel the ACT Executive Officer.Continuing ProfessionalDevelopment (CPD)<strong>The</strong> <strong>2012</strong> Continuing Professional DevelopmentProgram had another successful year thanks tothe combined efforts of the Divisional Presidentand the new CPD chair Adam Howarth.<strong>The</strong> recent Industry Forum combined with theDivisional AGM had over 100 people in attendance.Speakers included John Miller, Executive Directorof the ACT Master Builders Association; St GeorgeBank Economist, Jano Chan; and Paul Weightman,Managing Director/CEO of the Cromwell <strong>Property</strong>Group. Attendees were provided with a goodoverview of the global economy, issues affectingthe construction industry and property investmentissues particular to the ACT.Andrew Barr MLA, ACT Deputy Chief Ministeralso provided an update on current economicfactors specific to the ACT.<strong>The</strong> ACT Government, Economic DevelopmentDirectorate presented the transformational City toLake Plan that is now in the consultation phase.<strong>The</strong> 10 – 15 year plan for the West Basin of LakeBurley Griffin includes a stadium, convention centre,urban beach, parks, mixed use developments andassociated infrastructure including light rail, with apopulation of 15,000 to 20,000 people planned forthe new precinct.<strong>The</strong> API Christmas drinks combined with theCommercial <strong>Property</strong> Market Wrap presented byAndrew Balzanelli, Managing Director of JonesLang LaSalle, has become a popular fixture on theCPD calendar.<strong>The</strong> ACT Risk Management Module was heldon Saturday 11 August and presented by MrAndrew Sharpe, a partner of DLA Piper, with 74 inattendance.Excellence in <strong>Property</strong> AwardAnother successful API Excellence in<strong>Property</strong> Awards function was held in <strong>2012</strong> withsponsorship from the Village Building Company;Meyer Vendenberg Lawyers and ACT Building& Construction Industry Training Authority muchappreciated.24
