Perry, Pastor Emeritus at Broadway Baptist Church, dies at 89The Rev. Edwin F. Perry, a former pastor of Broadway Baptist Church who served for 31 years, diedOct. 25 in Penney Farms, Fla.He was 89.Perry was installed as pastor of Broadway Baptist in January 1949 in the chapel of Southern BaptistTheological Seminary. The church was meeting in the chapel in the time, having sold its building atBrook Street and Broadway downtown.The church had bought land for a new sanctuary on Brownsboro Road near Chenoweth Lane, wherethe church is today.Before seeking bids on the construction at the church's new site, Perry vowed to revive the "familypew, with mother, father, sisters, brothers, grandma and grandpa sitting in it" in the church.Perry later became president of the executive board of the Long Run Baptist Association, public affairschairman of the Kentucky Baptist Convention -- then the General Association of Baptists in Kentucky-- and chairman of the education <strong>com</strong>mittee of the Southern Baptist Convention.He was an early advocate of ecumenical work and was president of the Louisville Ministerial Association.He also was president of the St. Matthews Area Interfaith Association, which advocated a "Parent-Teen Code," restricting activities such as drinking, parties, social clubs and "going steady" for teenagersin East End churches and schools in the 1960s.Perry was chairman of the <strong>com</strong>mittee overseeing formation of Kentucky Southern College, a privateBaptist college from 1962 to 1969 which is now the Shelby Campus of the University of Louisville.The Voice Tribune reports: 10/20/2005...
