2013 – 2014 <strong>Waller</strong> I.S.D. <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>Course</strong> Offeringscooperation, and self-discipline. Students are required to either rent or purchase an instrument with supplies. A loanerinstrument may be provided depending upon the availability of the instrument.Symphonic Band1 yearPrerequisite: Audition and Band Director Placement<strong>Course</strong> Description: The Symphonic Band is the second performing ensemble band at the junior high level. Students will beprovided the opportunity to develop and demonstrate the techniques of musical instincts and the fundamental skills necessaryto perform repertoire appropriate to a symphonic setting. Music of the highest quality will be explored. Symphonic Band willperform in a variety of competitions and concerts throughout the school year. Students are encouraged but not required to tryout for region band and participate in the solo and ensemble contest. The <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> band program also helps to developstudent’s leadership qualities, responsibility, cooperation, and self-discipline. Students are required to either rent orpurchase an instrument with supplies. A loaner instrument may be provided depending upon the availability of theinstrument.Wind Ensemble1 yearPrerequisite: Audition and Band Director Placement<strong>Course</strong> Description: The Wind Ensemble is the top performing ensemble band at the junior high level. It is comprised ofstudents who have demonstrated commitment to the highest levels of professionalism, musicianship, and excellence. Studentsare provided the opportunity to explore and engage in individual contributions to musical textures, and emphasis on flexibleinstrumentation based upon a hybrid model of wind ensemble and chamber winds. Music of the highest quality will beexplored. Wind Ensemble will perform in a variety of competitions and concerts throughout the school year. Students arerequired to try out for region band and participate in the solo and ensemble contest. The <strong>Waller</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> band program also helps todevelop student’s leadership qualities, responsibility, cooperation, and self-discipline. Students are required to either rentor purchase an instrument with supplies. A loaner instrument may be provided depending upon the availability of theinstrument.6 th Beginning Choir 1 yearPrerequisite: None<strong>Course</strong> Description: Beginning choir is a performing arts class intended to increase understanding and appreciation of choralmusic through ensemble performances. Basic music theory will be introduced and developed throughout the year. Four basicstrands used in choir (perception, creative expression, historical/cultural heritage and critical evaluation) provide broad,unifying structures for organizing the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire at this level. Choirs will practicedaily during class with possible additional after school rehearsals. An annual membership fee is required of all choir students.Students in 6 th grade choir will be required to attend several concerts throughout the year held at the high school and will alsohave the opportunity to attend choir field trips.7 th - 8 th Intermediate Choir 1 yearPrerequisite: None<strong>Course</strong> Description: The 7 th and 8 th grade choirs are performing arts classes intended to increase understanding andappreciation of choral music through ensemble performances. Basic music theory will be developed further. Four basicstrands used in choir (perception, creative expression, historical/cultural heritage and critical evaluation) provide broad,unifying structures for organizing the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire at this level. Choirs will practicedaily during class. Students are expected to attend performances at the high school and rehearsals scheduled outside of classtime in order to fulfill the minimum course requirements. An annual membership fee is required of all choir students. Thereare opportunities for individual and ensemble competitions at the UIL level during both the fall and spring semesters. Studentswill also have the opportunity to attend choir field trips. The Choir Director will make final decisions regarding student choirplacement.<strong>Waller</strong> I.S.D.20
