SocietyThe history of Islamclearly identifies theamount of care tobe given to orphansand to sponsoringthem“We have honored the sonsof Adam…” [Isra: 70]. Man, inall stages of life, is respectedand honored, for his valueof being human. The morelevels he earns of praisesand high character and hedoes works of kindness andgoodness, the more he gainshonor and respect. Islamhas given orphan carefulattention, urged other tocare and protect his wealth, and warned against violationof his rights. Many verses in theQuraan, as well as theencouragement of theMessenger of Allah, peacebe upon him, are strongevidences of such attentiongiven to be the guidelines inall practices that dealt withsuch a matter. The historyof Islam clearly identifiesthe amount of care to begiven to orphans and tosponsoring them.Islam has taken great carein the interest of orphan,in terms of nurturing, care, and treatment to ensure adecent living for him and tobe a useful member in theMuslim community. Allahsays: “Therefore, treat notthe orphan with harshness.”[Duha: 9] and He also says:“Have you seen the one whodenies the Recompense?* For that is the one whodrives away the orphan.”[Al-Maa’un: 1-2] These versesaffirm that the care andcompassion must be givento orphans, so as not to feelinferior to other members ofthe community, and not tobecome a useless memberof the Muslim community.Allah also commandedto preserve the wealth oforphans, and not to exposeit to waste. He says: “Indeed, those who devour theproperty of orphans unjustlyare only consuming into theirbellies fire and they will beburned in a Blaze. [An-Nisaa:10], as He says: “And do notapproach the property of anorphan, except in the waythat is best, until he reachesmaturity. And fulfill [every]commitment. Indeed, thecommitment is ever [thatabout which one will be]questioned.” [Al-Israa: 34]The Messenger, peace beupon him, considered eatingup an orphan’s wealthto be among the seven6An Islamic Periodical Magazine - Issue No 18 June 2010

At the same time, he,the Messenger, promisedgreat reward for those whoensure the care of orphans,he, peace be upon him, said: “Whoever care for threeorphans is like, in reward, who stand in prayer all nightand fast all day and havinghis sword ready to fight in thesake of Allah, he and I will beclose brothers in heaven likethese two fingers, the indexand middle.” [Ibn Majah:2/1213].He, peace be upon him, considered charity toorphans to be a treatmentthat soften the heart of thecharity giver as narrated byAbu Hurayrah, may Allahbe pleased with him, anddocumented in [Musnad ofImam Ahmad: 2/387] whena man complained to theMessenger of Allah, peacebe upon him, harshness ofhis heart. The Messengercommanded him to wipe thehead of an orphan and tofeed the poor. For Islam to ensure theright of orphans, it givesa great attention for theMuslim community to becooperative and in harmony, through continuousexhortation to its members toserve each other, and reliefof distress of fellow Muslims, and to bring happiness tothemselves, and to guardtheir properties that is allgreatly rewarded. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, considered it to be the bestof deeds. Narrated from AbuHurayrah that the Messengerof Allah was asked: Whichdeed is considered to bethe best? He said: “Thebest of deeds is to causeyour believing brother tobe happy or eliminate hisdebt or feed him bread.”[Al-Baihaqi: 6/123]. He alsomade the help of man tohis Muslim brother to be acharity to himself. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleasedwith them, said that theMessenger of Allah, peacebe upon him, said: “In theson of man, there are threehundred and sixty bones, orjoints. On each one, everyday, is a charity: every goodword is a charity and thehelp of man to his brother isa charity.” [Bukhari: 1/152].The urging continues fromthe Messenger, peace beupon him, to the membersof Muslim community, tocooperate and be of serviceto each other. He, peace beupon him, said: “... whoeveris in the need of his brother,Allah will be in his need.”[Muslim: 4/1996]. He directedhis Nation that whoever isof benefit to people and tocause them happiness wouldbe most loved by Allah. Hesaid: “The most loved byAllah is the one that benefitothers and the most loveddeed to Allah, the Almighty,is the one that cause othersto be happy or to removetheir agony ... “ [Tabarani:6/58]. No doubt that one ofthe most anguishing eventsis being an orphan and whatcomes after, of being in astate weakness, harm, andloss. The gains of the care oforphans in IslamPerhaps the most importantgain is the spread of socialpeace where everyoneis busy in building andempowering of civilization.Orphans played a prominentrole in enriching the act ofHe said: “The mostloved by Allah isthe one that benefitothers and the mostloved deed to Allahknowledge and cultural,in various fields of science, management, andleadership.
