Grinstead Rural District Council dated the 24th February dating that Council were of opinion that theadoption of Bye Laws would not give them greater powers of dealing with nuisances arising from house refuse thanthey already possessed, and had found no difficulty in dealing with the matter.Earl De La Warr sale of fir treesWith reference <strong>to</strong> engines and saw benches used on the <strong>Forest</strong> as reported at the last meeting, the Clerk wrote <strong>to</strong>Messrs Box & Turner as directed; and having received on 3rd March a letter from Mr. Nicholson dating that he hadbeen <strong>to</strong> the <strong>Forest</strong> and was satisfied that the cutting up of the trees on the <strong>Forest</strong> and removal of the sawn woodwould cause less damage <strong>to</strong> the surface than the removal of the trees themselves and suggesting that the Lord’sright <strong>to</strong> cut necessarily covered anything incidental there <strong>to</strong> provided it were exercised with due regard <strong>to</strong> theinterests of the Commoners, the Clerk referred this letter <strong>to</strong> the Chairman who at once visited the spots where thesawing is carried on and, having satisfied himself that the sawing and carting away of the wood would do far lessdamage than carting over the <strong>Forest</strong> an immense number of trees, some very large, he instructed the Clerk <strong>to</strong>withdraw the Conserva<strong>to</strong>rs objection subject <strong>to</strong> the refuse being afterwards cleared away and the surface beingres<strong>to</strong>red.It is Resolved that having regard <strong>to</strong> the circumstances the action of the Chairman be approved and confirmed andthat the thanks of the Board be accorded <strong>to</strong> him for the trouble he has taken in the matter.Sylvanus Ridley claim <strong>to</strong> rights admittedWith reference <strong>to</strong> Mr. Sylvanus Ridley’s claim <strong>to</strong> rights of common in respect of Chestnut Cottage at Dodds Bank,for which he claims rights of common, the Clerk reports that he has examined the documents of title, that thisproperty is part of Ord. No. 582 and contains al<strong>to</strong>gether Oa 1r 35p that the cottage and Oa 1r 11p are part of atenement granted as copyhold on 31st May 1844, and that if the Board are satisfied that rights of common havebeen exercised in respect of this latter portion continuously as of rights for 60 years last past, Mr. Ridley in entitled<strong>to</strong> have his claim admitted in respect thereof, but that the remaining 24 perches being the south east part of theproperty, was an encroachment No. 124 sold under the Regulation award and is by the conveyance expresslyexcluded from any rights of common.The Board having heard evidence of user for the full period of 60 years last past it is Resolved that the Board aresatisfied that Mr. Sylvanus Ridley has established his claim <strong>to</strong> rights of common of pasture brakes and litter inrespect of the cottage and Oa 1r 11p of land and that he be entered in the schedule of Commoners in respectthereof45<strong>Ashdown</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>His<strong>to</strong>rical</strong> <strong>Minute</strong> <strong>Book</strong>
