Associates are to change out of their uniforms when smoking.Compliance with the policy is expected, based upon the importance of the message this conveys to ourMembers as well as the implications the policy has on the health and well-being of our Associates.Adherence to this policy is a condition of continued employment with GoodLife.Submission: I read the GoodTimes newsletter regarding the CPR training through Can-Fit-Pro and wasunder the assumption that this was an option for all Associates and not mandatory. However, my GroupEX Regional has informed me that that CPR is no longer offered to GoodLife Associates becausecertification must be done through Can-Fit-Pro. Can you please clarify?Answer: Can-Fit-Pro is the preferred CPR Provider for GoodLife Fitness Clubs. If there is a Can-Fit-Pro CPR PRO Trainer in your area, you can certainly utilize their services. The reasonwhy some clubs only require the Can-Fit-Pro CPR is because of the really great group discount rate whichcannot necessarily be beat. Also, any GoodLife Fitness Associates can use their Mo Bucks towards anyCan-Fit-Pro Programs which includes CPR.

However if the club does not have a CPR PRO Trainer in their area you can certainly utilize the service ofanother CPR company.

Step Into 2010 Feeling Your Best!Have the Holidays made you feel stressed out? Learn to “go with the flow”... bylearning to Meditate. 10 Minutes of Meditation a Day Keeps the Stress and FatigueAway and Calms Your Mind and BodyAdversity is a fact of life and can’t be controlled. In the face of life’s challenges, dailystresses and distractions you can react two ways: feel frazzled or find peace of mind.To find peace of mind and manage those moments that can frazzle your brain, learnhow to rest your mind and your body effectively by meditating. With meditation, youshut the world out and concentrate on calm. It only takes 1 to 10 minutes a day toreap the benefits of meditation. For those BodyFlow-er’s out there, you alreadyunderstand the benefits that meditation brings and have personally seen howmeditation brings calmness to people. Those of you who have never experiencedmeditation start by visualizing and breathing for one minute. To do this:(1 minute visualization)Visualize a turbulent surf or lake of water. Now imagine the wind dying down... and thewater calming down too. See the calm tranquil water as you breathe. Focus on the paceof your breathing and try matching your in breath with the ripple of water movingtowards the shore in your mind’s eye. Keep your eye on the calm, tranquil water as youbreathe slowly and deeply. Find the pause after the in breath and say “I am calm”, thenexhale…and let go of those turbulent thoughts and feelings that otherwise distract andfrazzle your brain (and your body eventually). Give your mind and body permission tolet go of what you cannot control and bring your attention or focus to what you cancontrol.(10 minute visualization)Find a comfortable, quiet place and visualize yourself in a room in a castle. You findthe door that allows you to walk out of the castle, and you do so. As you cross to theother side of the moat and keep walking, the castle dwindles in size behind you, andyou can now see the forest around it, and then a distant village. In your mind’s eye, walk towards that village and away from the castle.Your “castle” could be a rut or something oppressive you're trapped in, and thisparticular meditation gives you a sense of freedom and space. As you walk towards thevillage ask yourself “How important is my issue in terms of the bigger picture?” As youcontinue to walk towards the small village in the foreground of your mind, think aboutthe positives in your life, and be grateful. Think about your strengths and contributionsand say “I am… (fill in with a positive statement about yourself ie. ”I am an inspirationalteacher,” or “I am healthy”). Continue to repeat this statement about yourself toyourself with optimism in your words and thoughts. Use your breathing as a guide to

emain focused inwardly. Incorporate the one minute visualization from above as a wayto calm your mind and bring clarity to this particular visualization.A growing number of North Americans are seeking the benefits of this popular form ofalternative medicine. In 2007, a national survey found that nearly 10 percent of adults— more than 20 million North American people — had meditated in the previous year. That number had grown by nearly 24 percent since 2002 and is predicted to grow andbecome one of the more popular alternative exercise experiences. If you alreadymeditate, keep doing so and consider journaling. Writing down thoughts and feelingsabout what you are going through helps to process events and release emotions. Seekinspiration to meditate and, or journal by reading. Learn how to meditate if you havenever tried. Attending BodyFlow is a great start for many people. The foundation ofmeditation used in BodyFlow is commonly known as:Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). This program has beenused to address chronic pain and illnesses. Again, it requires you to focus onyour breath as it enters and exits your body, and when distracting thoughtsintrude, you return your attention to the breathing and let the thoughts passby. Another aspect involves "scanning" different parts of your body with yourmind to assess the sensations in the parts. This form of meditation offersnumerous benefits—addresses anxiety and stress, helps to control pain andother symptoms associated with chronic disease and mental illness includingdepression. To learn about the Top 10 ways to de-stress in 2010, refer to the Can-Fit-ProNovember-December 2009 magazine. GoodLife Fitness’s very own Georgia Mattheos(and Education Manager at Can-Fit-Pro) offers a wonderful “Daily Reminder” one-pagehandout for your participants. Print and share with your members. Also see January’s Exercise Tip of the month “Stress Management Strategies that take 5minutes or less” for more suggestions and ideas.

Ron’s StoryFor 12 years, I worked at a Toronto fitness club and thought it was pretty typical of all fitnessclubs. For the most part, I saw little or no change among the general gym population. Even thePersonal Trainers struggled to get clients let alone keep their clients on track with their goals.Generally we sold packages of 10-20 personal training sessions. Many clients did not renewafter their sessions were done happy to have learned some new exercises.Day after day, week after week, month after month, I saw people exercising with negligibleresults. Most had a general routine that they clung to with little variance: the same exercises,in the same order, with the same weight. No real plan, no real goals, no real change was typicalof most Members experience. It was the single most discouraging aspect of my job as a trainer.I knew it took commitment from the client as well as the trainer to effect real change. Wherewas the focus and dedication? It was not uncommon for clients to fall off their routine; theywould take the summer off for golf or cottaging. The winter was just as bad with ample excusesin the form of holidays, bad weather, flu season or general malaise. So why were so few seeingso little results? Was this typical of all gyms? I decided I needed a change in hopes of finding ananswer.I surrendered a long list of established clients and moved downtown to start afresh. I wanted togive it one more try. At a Can-Fit-Pro Conference I was exposed to the Core Values of GoodLifeFitness and thought this was a company that might help navigate me along my path towards afulfilling career in the fitness field. After applying and eventually being hired as a trainer, I was exposed to the fundamental CoreValues of GoodLife. At first, I balked at the idea of only prescription training packages; wherewere the 10 and 20 packs that people loved to snap up for their quick fix (not to be confusedwith "Fit Fix")? This had been my world. My initial reaction was fear. How could I sell suchlarge packages? Who would buy them?It was the passion and integrity of my Fitness Manager and Assistant Fitness Manager whohelped me truly understand why this is the only way personal training should be packaged. It'swhat's best for the client and that's what makes it such a powerful marketing tool. You aregiving the client what they need, not what they think they need. The financial commitment onlyserves to bring into sharp focus the importance of the investment in oneself. Ultimately, theonus is on the client to understand their crucial part in their success in training. Like two peoplein a rowboat each pulling on an oar, if one rower slackens their pace, the progress of the boat isimpeded. Both must be fully committed to the task at hand for success to be achieved. It madesense and was in fact the answer I had been looking for.

The integrity of GoodLife's prescription programming is what makes it an organizationdetermined to educate people on what personal training is and is not. It is a service entirelyfocused on one thing and one thing only: confronting an individual with their fitness needs andproviding a safe and effective means of getting them to their goal. Many if not most gymsallow the Member to dictate the protocols of personal training, but not GoodLife. GoodLifeattempts (and succeeds) at being the authority on personal training with integrity. I believe thisis what has led to GoodLife's preeminent success in the fitness market: an unwaveringcommitment to excellence in how it provides world class personal training to its Members.I'm proud to be part of GoodLife's personal training team!Ron ArendsPersonal TrainerGoodLife Fitness Club King/Liberty
