Squash Player Brings Home Medals from Pan American ChampionshipsMechanical issues with their aircraft and the fact they had to compete 3,000 metres above sealevel did little to inhibit Parkdale's Tara Mullins and the rest of the Canadian women's team atthe Pan American squash championships from Oct. 17 to 24.Mullins, 32, led the Canadian women's team at the Ambato, Equador event with a silver medalin singles play, followed by another silver medal in the team event. The new hardware brings her international medal count total to three. The reduction in air pressure at 10,000 feet above sea level made for bouncier balls and shorterbreaths out on the court, which added a different dynamic for many of the attendees."It's a big difference playing at a higher elevation, you can definitely feel it. You get windedquicker," said the McGill University commerce graduate who relocated to Toronto a decade agoto pursue a pro squash career. "The balls bounce a lot higher and it's harder to hit your target,in terms of finding your length on the court, but everybody's in the same boat so you kind ofjust have to accept it."Well, almost everybody was in the same boat. Mexico, winners in the team and individualevent, trains regularly in high altitude, which essentially left much of the rest of the field at aslight disadvantage.Mullins, the director of squash at six Toronto area Good Life Fitness locations, takes somesolace in giving up the gold medal to the tournament's top seed, Mexico's Samantha Teran."She's a tough opponent, she keeps you under a lot of pressure," she said."I came off exhausted and said 'Well, you know what, she was the better player that day.'"The Canadian squad, which also includes Montreal's Alexandra Normand and Ottawa'sSamantha Cornett - whom Mullins defeated in pool play earlier in the tournament - won itssemifinal matchup against Brazil, going three straight sets before running into Mexico again inthe final. Canada lost in the final 2-1.The recent showing doesn't qualify Mullins or the Canadian team for anything, nor does itimprove on any international rankings, but it does increase the amount of funding the team willget in the future.

Mullins, a bronze medalist at the last two Canadian championships, receives some backing fromBlack Knight and Ashway, but the majority of the costs associated with attending such premiersquash events is almost "100 per cent out of pocket".The economy of late hasn't helped matters any either."With the economy right now it's pretty tough with the tournaments that are out there, a lot ofthem are dropping off the international tour, so it's difficult to keep your ranking up."She plummeted from 51st in the world last year to her current ranking of 70, partly becausethere are fewer rankable events on the Women's International Squash Players Association tour.Sean Durack – InsideToronto.com

SPEAK OUT! SUBMISSIONS:At GoodLife we welcome our Associate’s feedback and suggestions, and our Speak Out! program is oneforum where Associates can choose to anonymously express ideas, opinions, recommendations andqueries. If you supply your email address, you are guaranteed a response. After the reply, the PeopleDepartment forwards ideas to the right channel, helping to ensure that every Associate’s voice is heard. Each eNewsletter we will publish some common submissions and answers, much like our MemberSuggestion Boards at the club.If you would like to make a submission to Speak Out!, please sign on to the CARE home page, and clickthe Speak Out! logo.Submission: Nothing to suggest! I love working for GoodLife!Submission: I, as well as other Associates, am extremely impressed with the packages that have beenput together for Length of Service Awards, New Home Office Associate Welcome Packages and NewMember Welcome Packages via email. These are all great steps that are not only truly appreciated by the individual’s that receive them butthey also help with creating a positive, professional reputation for GoodLife!Kudos to all of those involved in the above mentioned items; your hours/months of hard work havebeen well worth it!!Thanks again!Submission: GoodLife offers many perks to their employees which is amazing. I feel that it is a hassle toget any of them started due to the fact that when you first start everyone seems too busy to help youout, and as a new Associate you do not want to ask these things because, well, you are new. I think wehave great perks and they should be more talked about to new Associates.Answer: The Associate Relations Team here at GoodLife Fitness has recently implemented a newWelcome Package for all new Associates. This package includes information about many of the greatperks GoodLife offers: your free three month Associate membership, information regarding ourEmployee Assistance Program, information regarding insurance discounts from Stevenson & Hunt,Length of Service Recognition Rewards, future career opportunities within the company and informationregarding family gift memberships.

You have brought up an excellent point as new Associates can feel quite intimidated with everythingthat is going on in their first few weeks. However, we feel that this Welcome Package is a great way fornew Associates to be able to take home all of this important information that they can review on theirown time.

Hello General Managers!I wanted to take a moment to remind you of the new bonus structure for the MembershipConsultant Retention Bonus which was reintroduced July 1 st 2008.Below please find the details of the program, once you have reviewed them, pleasecommunicate this program to your current and new Membership Consultant when they arehired. This is great program, making it easier and faster for Membership Consultant andGeneral Managers to earn $2,000 each. We hope that these changes have helped to increasethe retention of our Membership Consultant. The quick rundown:- MC hits 100% BAM YTD goals for 3 full months = $500 for MC and $500 for GM- MC hits 100% BAM YTD goals for 6 full months = $500 for MC and $500 for GM- MC hits 100% BAM YTD goals for 12 full months and MC and GM complete a Black beltlevel = $1,000 for MC and $1,000 for GMThe Complete Details:Bonus #1: MC in months 1 thru 3 (please note, month one is the first FULL month the MCworks):MC hits 100% or more of their monthly sales goals for months 1, 2 and 3 combinedMC starts the MC Black BeltIf both qualifications are complete at the end of the MC’s third full month, the MC willreceive a $500 bonus. The GM will also receive $500, so long as they are also working ontheir GM Black Belt level.Bonus #2: MC in months 4 thru 6:MC hits 100% or more of their monthly sales goals for months 1 to 6 combinedMC is working on their MC Black BeltIf both qualifications are complete at the end of the MC’s sixth month, the MC will receive a$500 bonus. The GM will also receive $500, so long as they are also working on a Black Beltlevel.Bonus #3: MC in months 6 thru 12:MC hits 100% or more of their monthly sales goals for months 1 to 12MC has completed their MC Black BeltIf both qualifications are complete at the end of the MC’s twelfth month, the MC willreceive a $1,000 bonus. The GM will also receive $1,000, so long as they have alsocompleted their Black Belt level. *NOTE* The GM must work on and complete a new Black

Belt level during the MC’s first year. For example, if an MC starts in Sept. 2009 the GMcannot submit a GM Black Belt level that was completed prior to Sept. 2009. The MC andGM are working on a completing a new Black Belt level at the same time.Question: What if the MC didn’t hit 100% of sales goals for months 1 to 3 and didn’t earn theirfirst $500, but ends up exceeding their sales goals during months 1 to 6?Answer: Great news! If the percentages over sales goals for months 4 to 6 makes up for anyshort falls in months 1 to 3, the MC and GM can earn a total of $1,000 after their 6 th month (thefirst $500 plus the second $500 each). The same previsions apply if the MC didn’t hit their goals for months 1 – 6, but smash theirgoals in months 7 – 12, the overage in sales goal percentages can be applied towards anymonths where they may not have hit their sales goals. This therefore means that MCs and GMscan still earn the full $2,000 bonus. Please note: MCs and GMs need to continue to work at the same club together in order for theGM to qualify for the bonuses. If you have any questions surrounding this change, please feel free to contact Sacha Bates –Recognition and Engagement Administrator at sbates@goodlifefitness.com or 1-416-536-9849or 1-416-458-6664

Imagine having fighter jets flying over your head while teaching BODYPUMP®. Thatis part of everyday life for Jill Peck, Fitness, Sports and Recreation Coordinator atKandahar Airfield in Afghanistan. Here she tells her story.I find it difficult to share what it's like here. No words seem to suffice. Right now, with the Afghan elections taking place today (26 August), things are very hot. Lastnight, during another full BODYPUMP class, the music and my mic was drownedout by three fighter jets flying over us. The airfield is only about 1 km away from thegym. It sets a different kind of atmosphere, you know? They're flying because there is aneed to be flying to protect us and the troops out there. We get rocket attacks hereabout twice per week. It happens randomly and requires everyone to stop what you're doing - where ever you are - lie facedown on the ground, stay there for two minutes, then go to one of the many concrete bunkers outside. It hasn't happened in any of my classes yet, but it could someday. So, you see, we operate like we're not in a war zone until arude awakening when reality hits you. It's all good though. Everyone is used to it. There's no panic, only routine obedience tothe safety routines to protect ourselves.JilI is married to a Canadian Air Force member and is a mother of a 12-year-old daughter. Jill and her husband James bothteach RPM® and BODYPUMP®, normally at GoodLife in North Bay, Ontario, Canada.

By Shonda Cotton, submitted by Kim Rogers, Group EXercise Regional ManagerSettle in. This may take awhile...I'm home. I'm home from the most physically demanding and exhausting weekend ofmy life. BodyStep training. How did this happen? How did I, someone who used toHATE the gym, someone who was "morbidly obese" (by Weight Watchers standards)become a Pump instructor and now a soon-to-be Step instructor? This is not the path Iexpected. How did I get here?I'll tell you how. I got here through a connection made with a GoodLife instructor over 5years ago.I joined GoodLife in 2004. Actually, my husband 'joined me' as a Christmas present.I had two babies, 1 and 2 years old at the time. I was morbidly obese, weighing in atover 230 Lbs. I was in love with all the wrong foods. And I was sedentary.I started with the Personal Training. Twice a week, I worked out with a lovely personaltrainer. And I hated every second of it. I enjoyed her, but I was constantly checking theclock. When is this going to be over? When does this torture end? Why am I doingsomething I hate so much? I would tell myself I was doing it for my health, for my kids, for my future...whatever it took to keep going. But I still hated it.As I worked out with my trainer, I would see what was happening in the studio. It lookedlike so much fun, but well beyond my level of fitness. I couldn't possibly go in there andmake a fool of myself. No way. After some weeks of watching, admiring, desperately wanting to join in the fun, I tookthe plunge. I don't remember what class it was. I don't remember other participantswho were there. I don't remember the music we worked out to. But I do remember theinstructor. I remember her making me feel welcome. I remember her making me feellike I could do it. And I remember thinking I wanted to be like her. She was warm andwelcoming. She was fit. She was a role model. She was beautiful. I was none ofthese things, but Nicolle embraced me and made me feel like I could be. Nicolle madethe gym a fun and successful place for me, and she helped me get the results I wanted.Eventually, the dread of going to the gym wore off and, the desire to go took over. This journey I have found myself on began with Nicolle 5 years ago. She plowed theway for me. She made it possible for me to choose this particular path. She hasbecome more than an instructor to me. She has become one of my most cherishedfriends and a constant support in my life. Without her, I would not be sitting here in painafter such a demanding yet rewarding weekend. And I would not be craving hercinnamon rolls.

Of course, other instructors have helped me get here too. Laura V has become anamazing friend and mentor despite her initial fear of me (after I accosted heroutside GoodLife one day long ago). Her ability to entertain her participants anddevelop such a strong following is inspiring. Her enthusiasm and energy is contagiousand always leaves me thirsty for more.I have also found a friend in Rhonda. Rhonda's passion and dedication to the programskeeps me honest and on my toes. Her knowledge and support is deep and heartfelt. Iknow Rhonda has my back and she pushes me to be and to do my best.Over the weekend we discussed "connection" a lot. I could tell someweren't understanding why this was such an important element to LMI. But I knew why.I knew the only reason I was sitting in that studio was because of the connection aninstructor made with me all those years ago.I still struggle with my weight. And I am still in love with all the wrong foods. But thefact that I just completed BodyStep training makes these things a little bit more okaywith me.In pain and love,Shonda

On October 20, our very own Bowmanville Mall was so fortunate to haveMisty Tropoli, a Nike elite instructor, for a fundraiser. Misty came to teachthe members, instructors, PTs and young teens about the importance ofself-esteem, esteem, body image and learning to find your inner child. After a brieftalk, we then hit the floor for some fun Body Groove. I was fortunate toteach with this incredible teacher. Misty helped me raise over $450.00toward the GoodLife Children's Foundation.

The 7 AM BODYPUMP class at the Ottawa Queensview location got a "wake up call" withthe PJ-themed Halloween workout! Instructors Nadia Amimi, Andrea Guzzo and traineeKerry Chatburn provided an intense workout that morning that ensured the members thatthey could budget for a few dips into the Halloween candy... guilt free!! WithBODYPUMP, if "you burned it, you earned it!"

If you have such a thing (??), I'd like to nominate Marya Glinos as "instructor of themonth/year" - or at least, I want to pass on my very high praise of her. This past Saturday morning, at the London Life gym, Marya hosted dress-up BodyPUMPand cycling classes, and we had so much fun. It was another stellar example of howMarya (aka Cher, circa late '90s) can infuse her amazing spirit and enthusiasm into herclasses. I don't think any other instructor could have encouraged people to dress up fora class, dress up herself, and then have so much fun with it. She commits! And todemonstrate her chops as an instructor, she was able to lead both classes for greatworkouts without actually doing some of the exercises herself (boots a bit of handicapthere), and without missing a beat. Marya can pull a great workout out of you, with herverbal skills and enthusiasm - a true sign of a superior instructor, I believe.Marya, back row, third from leftIn my books, Marya is the benchmark for how all other instructors are measured. She isALWAYS there, in the moment 100%, making her classes all about the people in them.Marya is not there for her own workout, but to instruct the class. She consistently helps

new people and challenges the old-timers. We always benefit from her depth ofexperience and amazing people skills. Also, Marya never forgets she is a professionaldoing her job. She never disappoints. Marya is certainly a part of the London Life gymfamily.Marya will continue to get me out of bed on Saturday mornings, and make me stay lateof work on Wednesdays.

Submitted by Terri Dermo, Group EXercise Regional ManagerWith Polly Orchard (Zumba Team Leader) as our driving force, we created a City WideContest called “So you think you can dance?” featuring the GoodLife “celebrity” Zumbaand BodyJam instructors. We had classes running all over the city from Oct 31 – Nov17 th with a wrap-up party being held on the 17 th . Members picked up their “Around theTown Dance Blitz” passport cards at participating GoodLife clubs and obtained stampsat each Blitz class. They collected at least 5 stamps to be entered into a draw.We did this to bring more awareness to the Zumba and Jam classes as well asshowcase our great instructor team across the city. Zumba and Jam instructors teamtaught all classes so it was a fun party atmosphere; we offered snacks and prizes at theclasses as well.So far we have sold one membership (from the first Blitz) class, and I’m sure there willbe more to come!

ADAMLost 35 lbs. and decreased body fat by 10%“I feel better, look better andthink quicker than ever before.”

Adam’s Story…What an amazing journey! I’m sure most of you have heard of the “Freshman 15”! I lived an active lifestyle duringmy childhood always having a difficult time gaining weight. Until my first year at university where my diet worsenedand I became inactive resulting in almost a 30 pound gain in weight. Upon graduation, I began my career withHilton Hotels as a Management Trainee and over the years, worked my way up to the position of Assistant HotelManager. Managing in the hotel industry was a blast, every day presenting a new and unique challenge. Theindustry was demanding with long and odd work hours. As such, the last thing I wanted to do when I got home fromwork was go to the gym. I felt as though I was time starved. I mean I had a gym membership, I just could neverfind the time to fit fitness into my busy life. My diet had never been a focus in my life, eating fast food mostly and inthe restaurant at work.About 3 years ago, I stepped out of the hotel industry to complete an MBA in Hospitality and Tourism Managementat the University of Guelph. Upon completion, I was hired to teach in the undergraduate program at the sameuniversity. It was around this time that I became sick and tired of my lack of energy and physical appearance so Icommitted to a handful of sessions with Trevor King at the Burlington GoodLife to help me get into a gym routine. This was my first introduction to personal training. However, since I didn’t see immediate results, I becamediscouraged and stopped going to the gym when my sessions were complete.Almost a year later, I reached a point in my life where I needed more of a life balance. At this point I was stillteaching hospitality management at the University of Guelph. My career had consumed me…I was alwaysstressed, didn’t feel good about the way I looked and especially the way I felt. During the first week of January2009, I sat down with Trevor and committed to personal health and fitness goals. My New Year’s resolution was tobecome athletic again. This would require a serious life change. I committed to train for 1 hour with Trevor 3 timesa week for about 6 months. I started eating healthy and for the first time in my life watched what I ate. I realizedthe importance of cardio and began using the treadmill and elliptical in the gym on my non-training days. Slowly thecardio became more frequent in the gym. Then I decided to sign up for my first 10k race. It was an ambitious goalthat I wasn’t ready for at the time (2 weeks of training) that helped me realize the joy and satisfaction living an activelifestyle can hold. I ran my first 10K in the Ottawa Marathon with 10,000 other runners in 54 minutes. Since thatrace, I have completed other races bettering my time and can proudly call myself a runner. Cardio is no longercardio for me it’s active living….it’s fun. In my spare time, I run the stairs along the escarpment in Hamilton, swim, mountain bike, rollerblade; play tennis and rock climb in a local gym. My next fitness goals are to complete atriathlon and a half marathon. .I have well surpassed my initial goals that I set with Trevor back in January. I lost 35 lbs in weight, decreased mybody fat by 10%, and increased my cardiovascular health, strength, balance, and endurance. I feel better, lookbetter and think quicker than ever before. I have transformed myself in half a year from a sluggish, overweight, depressed person to an energetic, enthusiastic, positive athlete. The best part about getting fit and living a healthylifestyle is the ability to inspire others around me. It’s amazing the impact that I have had on family and friends overthe past few months. I am continually inspiring others to turn over a new leaf and get into the gym to do what I did.I love my life and I am forever grateful to my trainer who helped me with the journey. Thank you Trevor King!

BRYANBefore316 lbs.After206 lbs.A total loss of110 lbs.

Bryan’s Story…When I started this journey in my life I was a different person. Most of my life I have been overweight andnot physically active. For the most part I thought I was happy and excepted that I was overweight and wouldalways be overweight. However as the years went by the weight also piled on. I was no longer overweight. At 316 lbs I was obese. I made several attempts on my own but always failed. Each time I failed I wouldlose more of my confidence and self esteem. After several years of failing I no longer had the confidence inmyself and had given up.I decided to seek out some professional help. After searching for doctors and looking into exercise camps Idecided to try speaking with a personal trainer. On January 9, 2009 I met with a women who has helped mechange my life. Her name is Ranjna, a personal trainer at Good Life Fitness. Within the first 5 minutes ofspeaking with Ranjna I knew that she was the right fit for me.Both Ranjna and I agreed my goals were to lose body fat and build lean muscle. We decided to set my goalweight at 190 lbs and lose 126 lbs. She told me in order to make this work I needed to commit to a 3 days aweek with her, 3 days a week myself doing cardio, and eating a healthy diet. I gave her my word and signedup for an entire year.Working with Ranjna gave me a drive I had never experienced before. The physical results were so nice tosee however the emotional results were even bigger. Each workout with my trainer has given me moreconfidence in myself. My workouts are always personalized week to week. They are never boring andalways a challenge.“Trust your Trainer” I believe putting all my trust in Ranjna is why I am successful today. She has made theimpossible possible. The past 8 months has been so amazing. I feel there is nothing I cannot accomplish. Iam 110 lbs lighter and in the best shape of my life. I am so happy to say that I am a completely differentperson and I believe in myself. The confidence I never had before, I now have. I have a new love forexercise and can see my end goal. I realize now I was not happy with my life before. I just never knew howgood life should feel. For 36 years I was missing out on a huge part of my life. For anyone else who isthinking about changing their life, I cannot express enough how important a trainer has been for me. Eventhough I am the one doing the sweating, Ranjna has been the one who keeps me challenged, changes myworkouts, nutrition, and helps me through the tough times. My sessions with Ranjna go beyond the gym.Since I have been training with Ranjna I have learned how my body works with food and exercise. What mybody needs for food intake and how to get the most out of a workout. I never imagined when I enteredGood-life Fitness 8 months ago that I would be where I am today. This life style change is something I willkeep with me and use in my life, long after achieving my goals. I cannot not express enough thanks toRanjna for her dedication and time she has spent with me. She gives me her own personal time and careeveryday. It is obvious that this is more than just a career for Ranjna, it’s her passion.

Kyle’s Story…My name is Kyle and this is the story of how I reclaimed my health through working out with Anthony, my personal trainer at GoodLife. My weight had been noticeably increasing for several years. On one occasion in mid 2007, my doctor advised me that I was overweight and that if Ididn't take steps to stop gaining weight, I would be in danger of developing serious health complications. All the evidence pointed in that direction, andthe fact that I was an insulin-dependant diabetic (since age 2) who was already suffering from hypertension and high cholesterol (for which I was takingmedication), means my weight gain was definitely concerning. It was not until I was on vacation in Australia in January 2008, however, that I realized first hand how my weight gain and poor health had a noticeable andundeniable negative impact on my ability to enjoy myself. I lacked the stamina to enjoy the sights of Australia with my partner (whom I urged on severaloccasions to go ahead and explore Sydney without me), and my feet and ankles were always aching making it difficult to walk. I did not have the energyto enjoy the nightlife and I did not feel confident at the beach in Surfers Paradise. Despite the beautiful summery weather, I was always sweaty anduncomfortable. It made me vow to take control of my health and never let what could possibly be a once in a lifetime experience pass me by again.Upon our return from vacation, I tried a variety of activities to gain control over my situation such as walking more regularly and biking once and a while. Not surprisingly, I did not have any results. In fact, I gained weight between January 2008 and June 2008.At the time, my partner was training with Anthony, a personal trainer at GoodLife. I approached her about setting up an appointment with Anthony to see ifthere was anything I could do to stop the weight gain. Due to my previous unsuccessful attempts at losing weight, I was somewhat pessimistic about whatAnthony could do for me. I stressed to Anthony that my diabetes could be a hindrance in being able to achieve significant results at the gym. Anthony, however, was both positive and encouraging. I remember him saying "you can achieve any goal you set out for yourself, and we are here to help you dothat."When I began training with Anthony in July 2008,1 weighed 202.4 Ibs and my belly waist measured 47 inches. I had 37.5% body fat (which translates to76.0 Ibs of fat), a body mass index of 33.7Anthony asked me to identify a main goal, and some milestones we could track along the way. The goal I set out for myself was simply to lose my belly(or at least have my weight at a healthy level), but I did not set a date because I did not want to disappoint myself. We immediately got down to setting up a schedule of three days of resistance training; three days of cardio; and a meal plan for me to follow (includingkeeping a food journal). The results were instantaneous and in the first two months I weighed in at 180.4 Ibs and had lost 10.0% from my body fatpercentage (25.8 Ibs of fat). I had a body mass index of 30.0. Soon, clothes that were tight on me in June were becoming quite loose in August. Thedifference was noticed by close friends and colleagues whom I see on a regular basis as well as those whom I had not seen in a while. As for me, I could not be happier, I felt better about myself, I had more energy, and I was increasing in my confidence. The knowledge I gained through my discussions with Anthony had direct, immediate, and noticeable benefits in my diabetes control. The amount ofinsulin I was taking to compensate for my high blood sugar levels immediately dropped, and by a significant amount. Soon my blood sugar levelsbecame more stable, and easier to maintain/control. My LDL cholesterol level also dropped significantly (down from 5.9 to 2.6), and my blood pressureimproved from an average of 136/92 (with a resting heart rate of 90) to an average of 117/75 (with a resting heart rate of 72).After a while (around January 2009), Anthony noticed that my progress had slowed. While this was discouraging for me, Anthony kept me motivated andon track. He informed me that this was expected because I was putting on lean muscle tissue. In fact, Anthony was sure of it because my training sessionshad become more intense and I was lifting more weight. Anthony and I also modified my diet and continued to focus on key areas such as my corestrength, explosive power, cardio, and endurance. When Anthony did a body analysis in May 2009,1 weighed 161.6 Ibs, my belly measured 34 inches, I had a fat percentage of 15.4% (24.8 Ibs of fat), abody mass index of 26.9. That means in six months I lost 40.8 Ibs and 13 inches off my waist. Most importantly, I lost 51.2 Ibs of fat (almost threequarters of my total body fat) and gained 10.4 Ibs of lean muscle tissue. With Anthony's help I am now stronger, more agile, and much much more confident. I am happier, I have more endurance, and I know I will never missanother minute of a vacation again! I have gone through two belts since we started, and have reduced two notches on the belt I am currently using.Although I had to buy a new wardrobe, I was able to buy clothes that I never would have fit in a year ago. I have even been able to either reduce oreliminate the medications I take for hypertension and cholesterol.Anthony was right. "You can achieve any goal you set out for yourself." As a result, I have set new goals for myself such as putting on more lean muscletissue, increasing my endurance/stamina, strengthening my core, and achieving greater muscle definition in my abs, shoulders, and back. Anthony andthe staff at GoodLife were integral in keeping me motivated and on track when I began and they will be integral in the success of my new goals. Thedifference this time is I now have the confidence in knowing we will have no problem in smashing these goals.
