It seems to have a word foreverything and a way to make it mean one thing<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.According to <strong>the</strong> Yodatai it has been unchangedfor at least 500 years.The Yodatai tongue has a written form that issupposedly very easy to master.Eco<strong>no</strong>myWhile all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cultures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Burning</strong> <strong>Sands</strong>are dependent on <strong>the</strong> trade <strong>of</strong> goods and items,water is <strong>the</strong> be all and end all <strong>of</strong> valued items.Water brings life to <strong>the</strong> barren soil. Watersustains <strong>the</strong> body in <strong>the</strong> deep desert.Among all cultures, water is considered <strong>the</strong>pinnacle <strong>of</strong> trade items. Tokens that represent aman's accumulated water holdings are kept safeat ones side, each worth its owners weight ingold. All cultures accept water tokens as coinage.Water Tokens are made <strong>of</strong> burnished copper,stamped with <strong>the</strong> symbol <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city in which <strong>the</strong>water is held.Barter also comprises a large section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tradein <strong>the</strong> <strong>Burning</strong> <strong>Sands</strong>. Trade <strong>of</strong> one item fora<strong>no</strong><strong>the</strong>r is seen as a way to spread ones wealthamongst o<strong>the</strong>rs.Coins <strong>of</strong> copper, silver and gold, plus watertokens are <strong>the</strong> most common currency and arebroken down as follows.1 Gold coin = 10 Silver coins1 Silver coin = 10 Copper coins1 Water Token = 1-10 gold coins (depending on<strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> year)AshalanThe Ashalan seem <strong>no</strong>t to trade for anything <strong>no</strong>rneed anything, at least <strong>no</strong>thing that is k<strong>no</strong>wn.Ivory KingdomsThe Ivory Kingdoms most wanted substance is<strong>of</strong> course ivory from elephants as well as acouple <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r animals. Exotic wines, silks, andslaves make up <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material sent to <strong>the</strong><strong>Burning</strong> <strong>Sands</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Ivory Kingdoms.Moto & Ra'ShariThe Moto do <strong>no</strong>t trade <strong>the</strong>ir own goods. Instead<strong>the</strong>y raid and trade <strong>the</strong> stolen goods to one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r cultures. Sometimes <strong>the</strong>y even sell <strong>the</strong>mback to <strong>the</strong> group <strong>the</strong>y stole <strong>the</strong>m from.The Ra'Shari trade k<strong>no</strong>wledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> desert forwhatever supplies <strong>the</strong>y need.SenpetThe majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Senpet eco<strong>no</strong>my is based <strong>of</strong>f<strong>the</strong>ir immense building capabilities. A legion <strong>of</strong>Senpet slaves can build a fortification, house orbuilding in a matter <strong>of</strong> days or even hours,depending on its size. Senpet taskmasters <strong>of</strong>tenhire out <strong>the</strong>ir work gangs for cash and tokens.Senpet art is also highly sought after, seen as asymbol <strong>of</strong> culture and status, especially if <strong>the</strong>item <strong>of</strong> question is from <strong>the</strong> early days <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Senpet Empire.SultanateThey are <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trade that occurs. Notjust <strong>the</strong> trade <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Senpet and Moto, but <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Ra'Shari, Yodatai, Ivory Kingdoms and even <strong>the</strong>occasional Ashalan. Every trade is taxed, <strong>the</strong>coinage delivered to <strong>the</strong> treasury <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caliphand Sultan.Medinat al-Salaam also prospers because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>number <strong>of</strong> traders and <strong>the</strong>ir followers who cometo <strong>the</strong> city, constantly seeking places to stay,food to eat and water to drink.YodataiThe Yodatai do <strong>no</strong>t trade with many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>cultures, instead raiding and conquering <strong>the</strong>territories <strong>the</strong>y wish or item needed.Yodatai "merchants" will sell steel if neededitems can <strong>no</strong>t be found.TravelIn <strong>the</strong> desert <strong>the</strong>re are only three ways to travel.By foot, by horse or by camel.
