It seems to have a word foreverything and a way to make it mean one thingthen the other.According to the Yodatai it has been unchangedfor at least 500 years.The Yodatai tongue has a written form that issupposedly very easy to master.EconomyWhile all of the cultures of the Burning Sandsare dependent on the trade of goods and items,water is the be all and end all of valued items.Water brings life to the barren soil. Watersustains the body in the deep desert.Among all cultures, water is considered thepinnacle of trade items. Tokens that represent aman's accumulated water holdings are kept safeat ones side, each worth its owners weight ingold. All cultures accept water tokens as coinage.Water Tokens are made of burnished copper,stamped with the symbol of the city in which thewater is held.Barter also comprises a large section of the tradein the Burning Sands. Trade of one item foranother is seen as a way to spread ones wealthamongst others.Coins of copper, silver and gold, plus watertokens are the most common currency and arebroken down as follows.1 Gold coin = 10 Silver coins1 Silver coin = 10 Copper coins1 Water Token = 1-10 gold coins (depending onthe time of year)AshalanThe Ashalan seem not to trade for anything norneed anything, at least nothing that is known.Ivory KingdomsThe Ivory Kingdoms most wanted substance isof course ivory from elephants as well as acouple of other animals. Exotic wines, silks, andslaves make up the rest of the material sent to theBurning Sands from the Ivory Kingdoms.Moto & Ra'ShariThe Moto do not trade their own goods. Insteadthey raid and trade the stolen goods to one of theother cultures. Sometimes they even sell themback to the group they stole them from.The Ra'Shari trade knowledge of the desert forwhatever supplies they need.SenpetThe majority of the Senpet economy is based offtheir immense building capabilities. A legion ofSenpet slaves can build a fortification, house orbuilding in a matter of days or even hours,depending on its size. Senpet taskmasters oftenhire out their work gangs for cash and tokens.Senpet art is also highly sought after, seen as asymbol of culture and status, especially if theitem of question is from the early days of theSenpet Empire.SultanateThey are the heart of the trade that occurs. Notjust the trade of the Senpet and Moto, but of theRa'Shari, Yodatai, Ivory Kingdoms and even theoccasional Ashalan. Every trade is taxed, thecoinage delivered to the treasury of the Caliphand Sultan.Medinat al-Salaam also prospers because of thenumber of traders and their followers who cometo the city, constantly seeking places to stay,food to eat and water to drink.YodataiThe Yodatai do not trade with many of thecultures, instead raiding and conquering theterritories they wish or item needed.Yodatai "merchants" will sell steel if neededitems can not be found.TravelIn the desert there are only three ways to travel.By foot, by horse or by camel. When on camel or horsebacktravel becomes much easier. The distances areless and the travel time is easily cut in half.Horses though are not ideally suited for thedesert. They are used sparingly in the opensands, usually for quick raids and by messengers.The camel is truly the best animal to use to travelthe desert. Capable of going for many dayswithout water, the camel can carry a heavy loadand rider for a good distance, easily from oneoasis to the next.One other animal is occasionally seen being usedas a beast of burden in the desert, the elephant,though it is usually seen more in settled areasthan the open sands. Easily capable of carryingseveral times its own weight, the only downfallis that they are a slow steed, and unless one isprepared to take a large amount of water withthem on a long trip into the open sands, they arenot a wise choice for long distance travel. Mostoften, they can be found along the banks of theriver, pulling barges or toting howdahs andboxes.FoodThe food of the Burning Sands can best bedescribed as a combination of spicy and sweet.Coffee and tea are drunk at almost every meal.Dates (an easily grow fruit) are seen everywhere, as are various grains and easily growntubers. Rice (a staple of the Rokugani diet) isalmost unknown among the Sultanate and Senpetcultures, though the Moto harvest a decent cropof it, which they trade to the others on a regularbasis.A common meal within Medinat al-Salaamwould consist of a bitter coffee or tea to drink, aplatter of breads, dates and cheeses, a small plateof mixed peppers and tubers.ClothingPerhaps one of the most unusual of subjects forthe Burning Sands. Some garb is quite common.In the open sands one wears light colouredclothing that reflects the sun and always aheaddress to protect one from the heat. At night,a heavy cloak is over put on to protect one fromthe cold.AshalanThe Ashalan wear cloaks and robes that coveralmost 90% of their body, leaving the face free ifanything.Ivory KingdomsThe people of the Ivory Kingdoms wear clothingsimilar to that of the Sultanate, with turbans andloose clothing.Moto & Ra'ShariMoto garb differs from most Burning Sandscultures in two ways. The first is that it is notflowing, allowing them to ride with ease. Thesecond is that it has a distinct Rokugani look to itbecause of the time that the Ki-Rin spent withthe culture. Moto clothing is not really designedfor prolonged desert wear and as such, mostMoto will adopt the standard desert garb whentravelling the open sands.Ra'Shari wear clothes suited for desert travel.Hooded cloaks, warm boots and well wornleathers.SenpetAmong the Senpet, city garb can vary fromperson to person. Most males wear a short kilt ofsome type, and sometimes a tunic with it in theevenings. Women wear a long dress that coversthe torso and legs, but leaves the arms bare.Among the nobles, certain women have adoptedthe style of leaving their midriff bare, crisscrossingthe material over their breasts asprotection and for modesty.Senpet nobles often sport elaborate semipermanenttattoos and make-up designs on theirfaces.SultanateIn Medinat al-Salaam, men's clothing is oftenlong and flowing, with colors varying fromblacks and whites to reds and golds. The womenof the city tend to wear long dresses, whichcover much of their bodies, as it is consideredagainst the teachings of the Prophet to show suchflesh. Noble women often wear dresses ofgossamer material that cover them quitecompletely, but still almost show what isunderneath, flaunting the rule.
