Legend of the Burning Sands RPG Campaign SettingBOOK ONE: THE BOOK OF SANDAn Outlander's Guideto the Burning SandsWhat follows is a basic outline of The BurningSands history, culture and socio-politicalstructure. The history is told in a narrative formto give you an idea of how the people of theBurning Sands view their past.The First Age: CreationIn the beginning, there was only the Sun, theMoon and their children, the stars. They werealone, boundless within infinite space. This wasthe First Age of the World, and little of it can becomprehended by us. Eventually, they createdthe Jinn, who were the first to walk this place.The Jinn were powerful, akin to godsthemselves, and even after they created others tolive within the world with them, they remainedthe most favoured children of Shilah and Kaleel,the Sun and Moon. Then, over a thousand yearsago, the world was a verdant, lush place, withgreat seas and mountain ranges and forests as faras one could travel. The Jinn and their creations– the Ashalan and humanity – rejoiced in theirnewfound paradise.The Second Age: The FirstJinn WarThe Second Age was to be granted to the Jinn, sothat the gods would be able to retire back to theirhomes beyond the sky. The Jinn were offeredgreat power, and tutored in its use. They were tobe the gods of a new dawn. But somethingterrible occurred; many of the Jinn were notbenevolent beings. Seizing the free will theircreators had blessed them with, several of themost powerful Jinn, including their Champion,who had taken the name of the Moon, staged acoup against the gods. The Jinn Kaleel and hisfive brothers lashed out with their new strength,together toppling the Moon and casting him intoan eternity of quiet slumber.Other Jinn responded in kind. Striking withoutwarning, a horde of them invaded the night sky,dousing thousands of stars and capturing the rest.Together, the Jinn imprisoned the eveningheavens, quickly becoming more than a matchfor the few who would stop them. With thedawn, Shilah arrived to behold their crimes, andwas horrified by what her beloved creations hadbecome. In an instant, the shambling hordes of anew Kaleel descended upon her, trapping theSun within a prison built of their awful face. Cutoff from all that she had envisioned, and thinkingher cherished family dead or destroyed, shequickly fell into madness, loosing her own powerfor the eager Jinn to collect. Within one cycle,Kaleel and his Legion had captured the world.Soon, they embarked on a campaign of terror,reducing their own creations to subjects orslaves, or consuming them whole in a lustfulrampage of destruction…There were a few that opposed them, however.Ashalan and human were forced to work togetherfor the first time in history against a common foe– their own progenitors – with all creation atstake. Weapons were conceived and forged tofight the new menace, but few were effective,and countless lives were lost. At first, it seemedas if the Jinn were unstoppable, that the new Agereally would be theirs to corrupt until nothingwas left of the original vision of the Sun andMoon…But twelve Ashalan refused to submit to the willof the Jinn. They conspired in secret, workingwith the most skilled humans to devise a way tofight back. Together, they discovered the secretof sandsmithing, and constructed swords madeof crysteel, which could cut through theinsubstantial bodies of the Jinn like flesh.Eventually, a human named Hakhim, aided byLammassar, Katani, and others, stumbled upon afabulous magic – a sigil made of light and smokethat formed a map of all known magic. Lockedwithin its myriad revolving icons were the keysto understanding the nature of the Jinn and thegods that had created them. Hakhim’s Sealbecame the focus of a new direction for thestruggle.The Seal also offered two new and startlingrevelations about the current war. First, itillustrated, in bold and amazing spectacle, howthe efforts of the Jinn would eventually spreadbeyond our own lands, consuming everythinguntil they were the only powers left, replacing3Legend of the Five Rings Fan Book
