<strong>Tulane</strong> University<strong>Architecture</strong> <strong>Program</strong> <strong>Report</strong>September <strong>2013</strong>cataloged titles. <strong>Tulane</strong> libraries retain 704 architecture/architecture-related serial titles, <strong>of</strong> which 169are housed in the <strong>Architecture</strong> Library.The Latin American Library, a unit <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tulane</strong>’s Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, houses both circulatingand special collections materials associated with the built environment in Latin America.The Music & Media Center, a department in <strong>Tulane</strong>’s Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, purchases videoand audio-visual materials on a selective basis. Holdings include documentaries and fictive filmsassociated with famous architects and buildings, historic preservation, urban planning andsustainability.The Southeastern Architectural Archive (SEAA), a special collections department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tulane</strong>’s Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, is the largest architectural archive in the southern United States, housing nearly1 million architectural drawings; 250,000 photographs and thousands <strong>of</strong> historic building trade catalogs.Additionally, the SEAA houses the Garden Library <strong>of</strong> the New Orleans Town Gardeners, a noncirculatingcollection <strong>of</strong> library and archival materials focused on regional horticulture and gardens.The Louisiana Research Collection (LaRC), a special collections department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tulane</strong>’s Howard-TiltonMemorial Library, houses library and archival materials associated with the history <strong>of</strong> Louisiana.Manuscript collections include the papers <strong>of</strong> local architects, architectural educators andpreservationists, and historic property owners. Additionally, LaRC houses an extensive cartographiccollection.The Rare Books unit <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tulane</strong>’s Howard-Tilton Memorial Library retains important works <strong>of</strong> AndreaPalladio, Augustus Pugin, William Kent, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Jacques-François Blondel, JamesGibbs, Inigo Jones, James Stuart, Batty Langley, Benjamin Asher, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, Sir John Soane, John Ruskin, Richard Norman Shaw and Gustav Stickley.The <strong>Tulane</strong> Law Library, administered by and housed in the <strong>Tulane</strong> University Law <strong>School</strong>, supports theresearch and curricular needs <strong>of</strong> faculty and students by providing access to an outstanding collection<strong>of</strong> print and electronic legal materials. Holdings include publications associated with the legal aspects <strong>of</strong>architecture, engineering and construction processes, and those associated with historic preservationand community development.The <strong>Tulane</strong> University Archives preserves the <strong>of</strong>ficial records <strong>of</strong> the university, including departmentaland school administrative records, theses and dissertations, yearbooks, historic photographs anddocuments associated with building campaigns.The William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive, a special collections department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tulane</strong>’s Howard-TiltonMemorial Library, retains oral histories, photographs and sheet music publications that documenthistoric structures and places associated with jazz musicians and performances.Collection Development: To ensure that library resources are appropriate to <strong>Tulane</strong>’s educationalprogram, collections are tightly focused on the academic needs <strong>of</strong> the university through a liaisonprogram that assigns librarian bibliographers to work in concert with each supported academicdepartment or school. The academic units themselves assign “book chairs” to work with the library in aliaison partnership. Individual collection policies document selection parameters and considerations foreach unit that are regularly updated. <strong>Architecture</strong> faculty, staff and students may request books inrelated fields through the library’s “suggest a book” interface or by referral to the appropriate liaisonlibrarian.The formal liaison relationship with the faculty also informs the development <strong>of</strong> library services thatenhance access to collections, as does the faculty’s role in serving on the Faculty Senate Committeeon Libraries and the library’s partnerships with other campus entities such as <strong>Tulane</strong>’s TechnologyServices.50
