PHYSICAL CONTROL IN CARETunnel vision• Under stress an individual will lose part of their peripheral visionas they focus on the direct threatTime distortion (tachypsychia)• Visual slow down• The speed of events seem to be distorted, what happens inseconds seems to last for minutes• Temporary memory loss• Unable to recall key eventsConflict of perceptions• The person involved cannot remember large parts of an incidentbut they can remember small details• Witnesses can remember what happened generally but cannotremember minute details.Auditory exclusion• This occurs when the blood vessels in the ears are dilated bythe adrenal hormones making it difficult to hear• High-pitched sounds are predominant; other sounds fade intothe background.The Adrenal MapWhen staff anticipate confrontation they may experience a slowrelease of adrenaline. Although the release is not as intense as a fastrelease of adrenaline it can tire and affect the member of staff. It ispossible that working in a hostile environment may have this longtermeffect on staff that can go unnoticed.Fast release (adrenal dump) occurs when staff are not anticipating aconfrontation and it happens without warning.To combat the effects staff should attempt to remain in a constantstate of readiness and be prepared to deal with all forms of conflict.This can lead to a combination of both releases and staff will need to© National Offender Management Service National Tactical Response GroupJuly 201018
