Faxand Internet registrations require Master-Card or VISA credit card information.Which club will take home the Class X Championship Quilt ?Initiated in 2012 by Regatta Chairman Richard Beersof Delavan Lake Yacht Club and his enthusiastic committee,a new tradition in the Class X Championship Regattahas been established.Beers was able to convince all 17 ILYA member clubswith X Boat fleets to produce a square for an ILYA X Boatfleet quilt. The efforts of each participating lake resulted inthis magnificent quilt won in 2012 by Lake Beulah. Beulahwill return the quilt to Oshkosh—the host of the 2013 Xchamps next July.According to the deed of gift, two weeks prior to eachannual regatta, the quilt will be delivered from the currentILYA Club of Record to the next ILYA X Inland Host Clubfor a repeat of the annual cycle. Regatta attendees are ableto bid for the quilt in the name of their club. Proceeds ofthe bid process go to defray the cost of the host regatta.The announcement of the winning club will be madeat the trophy presentation following the completion of theregatta.
SPRING / SUMMER 2013 SCOW SLANTS PAGE 47ILYA’s newest Member Yacht Club...Welcome Cuba Lake Yacht ClubThanks to the efforts of a Lightning sailor named KarlFahrner, the Cuba Lake Yacht Club was organized in thesummer of 1950 to promote sailboat racing. Four yearslater, the club acquired a sizable lot and built the mainfacilities it uses today: a large, open pavilion, with attachedkitchen, restrooms and shower room; a launching ramp,two electric hoists, and a long pier, with ample room tokeep boats on lifts or to dry sail, and with lawns big enoughfor lots of games and sports. We have recently added astorage facility for small boats, (Optimists, Bics, Lasersand Sunfish), and will have a new wharf in place before thesummer for the use of the junior sailing program.C Scows have been on our lake since the 1930s, andMCs since the 1970s. Thanks to the efforts of many of ourlonger-term members, our club has undergone a renaissanceover the past five years. Our C fleet, which had dwindledfrom a dozen boats in the 1980s to only three or four, hasmore than tripled in size, with eighteen turning out for ourbiggest events, and our MC fleet has become much moreactive. All of this ties directly to the advent of a freshjunior sailing program that began in 2009. We do not havea sailing school: we offer a Pirate Academy, the “Pirates ofthe Cubarrean,” which combines fun activities with the goalof mastering the use of sheets and tillers. Starting with justnine students in 2009, we now have over 40 enrolled, withthe most experienced nearly ready to move into the “adult”fleet.Our most popular weekend of the summer is “teamrace weekend,” during which the C fleet is broken intoseveral three or four boat teams, (depending on the numberof entries). The races are run and scored as a typical teamracing event, with teams structured as best we can to giveeach a relatively good chance of winning. We also requirethat all boats carry one of our junior sailors as a third crewin all of the races. On that Saturday night, we hold our“Pirate’s Ball,” which serves as a fun night out for the entirefamily. On Sunday morning, we have a separate, specialrace (not counted in the team results) in which the juniorsailors take the helm of the C boats. Both the junior raceand the team event have proven to be big hits.Our newly approved ILYA Fleet designator is NY,so when you see it, be assured we are very proud, not justto be the Inland’s newest club member, but to also be itseasternmost C fleet.420 fleet opts for dip start,other youth fleets make it an option, adult fleets say ‘no’Originally proposed by the ILYA Club 420 Class, theoption of using Code Flag “P” as the preparatory signal forILYA classes was discussed by all the fleets. Code Flag “P”allows for what is known as a ‘dip start.’ Yachts which areover the line at the start can simply dip back behind the lineto restart.After the Winter Inland fleet meetings,the adult fleets all reported to theBoard of Directors that they would preferto stay with the ILYA’s traditional Code“I” flag starting procedure, which requiresa premature starter to round an end of theline before restarting — the old ‘round theends’ rule.Club 420 Race Committee teams areinstructed to use Code “P” in all initialstarts. Class X and Opti leaders decided tomake the dip start an option of the RaceCommittee, to be used as appropriatedepending on the number of entrants andother considerations. This will includethe No Tears and Green fleet events in theOpti Class.Should the race committee choose to go to the “Z” flagstart after one or more attempts with code “P”, the ILYAsailing instructions indicate that the round-the-ends rule willapply to re-starters, even thought the I flag will not be flownwith “Z”. This is the traditional procedure that ILYA hasfollowed in the past.
