PHILOSOPHY(PHIL)PHILOSOPHY (PHIL)171What is Philosophy? Philosophy is a discipline thatexamines fundamental questions about everyday lifeand the natural world. The main objectives of studyingphilosophy at College of Alameda are: (1) to criticallyanalyze ideas, texts, arguments, traditions, andcontemporary culture, and (2) to synthesize knowledgefor the purposes of inspiring personal and social change.By studying philosophy, you will gain wisdom, clarity,and awareness about a wide variety of philosophicalissues that arise within different cultural and historicalcontexts.Philosophy will prepare students to transfer to anydiscipline of their choice within the humanities and socialsciences at a college or university. In addition, you willlearn valuable life skills such as critical thinking, culturalcompetence, social activism, community-building,and conflict resolution.
