any form, anything, would that be theapproach that you mean?THE MASTER: I tell you. In the scriptureswe sometimes find the words "thesoul is dead." We find it in the Christianliterature and in others, too. What dothey mean? Guru Nanak said, "Only heis alive, 0 Nanak, who is conscious; whohas become conscious of the DivinePlan; who knows, who sees, God. Allothers are dead." Do you follow me?Those whose attention is identified withall of the outside things, their attention isconsidered to be as dead; but it is reallynot dead. Do you see? This is what ismeant by this in all scriptures. The soulis never dead; but when its whole attentionis absorbed in outer things, in materialthings, it is defined as dead. It isalready there; but it awakens if you withdrawit from the outside, that's all.Anything else? Yes, please?QUESTION: Are we to attempt to recordihe number of thought failures thatwe have in our diaries-the actual numbersfor each one?THE MASTER: Yes. Just as I explainedit to you. What can you put in the columns?You can only give the number offailures. Just the number of failures willguide you. If vou are falling down inthat respect, try to weed it out the followingday, that's all.QUESTION: We know that we can stillbuild karma if we're not very careful inthis life. And there are rnarry things thatwe still don't have clear in our minds.Among them is the question regardinganimals.We all love animals dearly, but thereare those among us, throughout thecountry or the world, for that matter,who sometimes feel such compassion andsympathy for animals that have beenneglected, that they take it upon themselvesto try to feed and house these lit-tle creatures. Consequently, there arethose who, in some cases, have manycreatures that they house and feed. Thenthere is a complaint, perhaps in theneighborhood, regarding the party thattakes on these little creatures. Now thequestion is, when a person takes theseanimals for love and care, or perhapsfinds another home for them-whenthey have these many creatures-arethey, by chance, taking on a karma thatis the animals' karma? Are they takingthat karma on themselves? 1THE MASTER: Look here. Scripturesare very clear about it. We simply ruminateover them. Soul is in everybody; itis in animals, too. Love them for theGod in them, for the soul in them, notas body. If you love man, why not lovecreatures-I mean, animals? If you loveeven serpents, they won't harm you.They have the soul in them. The pity itis that we love animals, but do not loveour fellow brothers. Do you see?There is no harm, you may join amovement to help animals; you mayhave pity on the animal kingdom. Afterall, they have no court to go to to complainabout the atrocities that are extendedto them by man. That's all right.But should you, for that reason, hateall other men? Love all, but for the life,for the soul and God in them. If you doit for that sake, then naturally, "As youthink, so you become." If you forgetGod, then wherever you are attached,you will go, is it not so? So love all,please: love God, love man, love animals,love birds. Experience shows thatif you love snakes, even they won't harmyou; they will come and sit by you. Thishappened so many times in the life historiesof many Masters. It happened inmy case, too. During a satsang in Delhi,a cobra came up and stood on his tail inthe presence of about two thousand people.They cried, "A cobra is here!"10 SAT SANDESH
"Oh, never mind," I said. He waslooking at me throughout the one houror so the talk lasted. When the talk wasover, he sneaked away. And the peoplesaid, "Let us kill him.""But why?" I said.Do you see? They also have sense;they have got souls. So, love everybody.No one will harm you; even snakeswon't harm you.Loving animals is good; love evensnakes, love your enemies: love the Godin them, for the soul in them-for thatreason. Then there's no binding effect.If you love them for their own sake, youare bound.Yes, you were saying something?QUESTION: I have a policy oj my own:I see many people today take animalsinto their homes and take them to bedwith them.THE MASTER: This is what I'm tellingyou. For the God and the soul in them,do what you can. But to love them morethan men?QUESTION: NO. That's it. So, in otherwords, then, I'm doing the right thingwhen I don't want them in my bedroomor in my house, even.THE MASTER: NO, no, YOU see; givethem facilities, that's all; bring them up.QUESTION: Take care of them.THE MASTER: This is what 1 say: wego too far. I tell you, there's a story inthe Koran, the Mohammedan scriptures.There was a lover of God who alwaysdevoted all his time to his prayers.There was a bird in a tree close by, andthe bird's voice was very sweet. Whatdid the man do? He left his place andsat under the tree where he heard thatvoice. He would say his prayers, but hiswhole love was for the bird. And Godtold him, "Look here, you have lovedthe bird more than Me. I am leavingyou."<strong>May</strong> 1976Love all for the sake of God. Loveone another for the sake of God in man,Then there's no harm. If anything goeswrong, go straight to the person privately.Meet him and clarify it beforegoing to bed, because the next day somethingelse about it might creep up. Forgiveand forget, and go with a cleanheart into the lap of God; that's thebest thing. When we forgct these things,trouble arises.QUESTION: In other words, you lovethem in their place?THE MASTER: Yes, surely.COMMENT: Certain people attach toomuch importance to animals and forgettheir meditation. They don't know howto take care of people in the world.THE MASTER: Oh, love them; as I toldyou, love the God and soul in them. Butit is the highest duty to love God. Now,1 told you that that bhakta spent all hislife in prayer, but he became attachedto the sweet voice of the bird and lefthis place and lived there. And God said,"Well, you have more love for that bird-not for Me." If you love him for Hissake, then you are saved; otherwise, youare bound, that's all.QUESTION: Master, a little further onthat question. Now, if we love these animalsfor the love of God that is withinthem, too, since they are living soulsalso, is it possible for us in any way, inthis great love that we have for thoseanimals, to help them to go throughtheir lives a little faster und perhaps gothrough their evolution?THE MASTER: Look here, I tell you,your intellect is going too far into thething now. 1 have told you, love all. Doyour best for their love; bring them up;but don't forget your connection withGod. In their service, if for the sake ofthe bird's voice, you leave God, that isnot a wise thing to do. Mind your own11
