99"Live and Let Live ...from a letm by C. James NicholsonEDITOR'S NOTE: Master used to tell thestory of Arjuna's vow to kill anyonewho insulted his bow, Gandiva; andwhen it happened, and he was fitting hisarrow to the bow to fulfill his vow, LordKrishna asked him what he was doing.Arjuna replied that it was his moral duty(dharma) to fulfill his vow. Then LordKrishna asked him, "What is the fruit ofdharma? Is it pain to others, or theirhappiness?" Arjuna, getting the point, replied that the fruit of dharma was loveand harmony. He did not kill anybody. In the discourse published this month,"The Things Love Knows," in the sectionwhich gives the talk its title, Mastercarries the point further:"This is one thing: love for all. If youhave love for all, why is there not lovebetween the brothers? You have beenconnected in a relationship which cannever break, even after death: becauseyou are all on the Way, the same Way-in direct contact with God. This is thefirst thing. When you know bve, youcannot hate anybody. You will neverthink evil of others, never speak evil ofothers. You will never suffer to hear evilof others; you will never see evil inothers. Love knows all these things. Forwant of this, there is all this trouble.. .."We are grateful to Mr. Nicholson forsharing his beautiful letter. Aside fromdeleting references to specific persons,we have published his letter as he wroteit. On only one point do we difler: Hegives the impression in the first part ofhis letter that Satsang is only for meditation. But a very important part of Satsangis the reinforcement through theouter senses of those impressions that inspireus with a longing and yearning to16go inside. If a living Master is cond'uctingSatsang personally, this happens onmany different levels at once. But evenin the physical absence of a Master, ifthe teachings are presented in a lovingand Master-like way, there is enormousbenefit. But i/ Satsang is used as aforum for tearing our brothers and sistersapart in the name of Righteousness, then the question applies: "What is thefruit of Satsung?" So the contents of Mr.Nicholson's letter apply to the conductof Satsang as well as to our individuallives.Y DEAR SISTERS: Received yourM letter and read it very carefully.Thank you for your loving concern aboutthe - Satsang. My dear sisters, I don't know thesource of your information nor does itmatter very much; because each personsees things, on the mental plane, fromhis or her point of view, and thereforethere are as many points of view as thereare persons. With this in mind, I will try,as best I can, to give my own convictions. The word Satsung means, to be in thePrcsence of Truth. When we sat at Master'sfeet, He was Truth and thereforeit was aptly called Satsang. When wespeak of [any] Satsang, we are really referringto a number of initiates who havegathered together to meditate. How far each one will really haveSatsang or be in the Presence of Truthwill depend how deep his or her meditationis. Those who go deeper will becloser to Sat and those who see the Belovedwithin will truly have Satsang, while those who cannot go in wouldSAT SANDESH
