in the protecting cradle of rugged hills,Kiratpur was founded by the sixth SikhMaster, Guru Har Gobind. (For an excellenthistory of the Sikh Gurus, thereader is invited to Glimpses of the DivineMasters, by Ranbir Singh). Thousandsand thousands swarmed into theSatsang compound from Kiratpur andsurrounding villages. Many had been sittingand waiting patiently for their Lordto come for over four hours. Kiratpurhad been bereft of His physical presencefor three long years. The love and devotionof these simple people surpassedanything I had yet seen. Three yearsago there were but a handful of Satsangis, but since that first visit the Master'sname spread like wildfire throughthe villages surrounding, and many aneager one flocked to the Satsang to havethe Darshan of the Param Sant. Manywho came only out of curiosity and tofind fault were converted by the alchemyof His Holy Presence. We were given quarters for the nightin a very lovely and simple adobe homeof a Satsangi. Surprisingly, such anearthen abode is very clean, cool insummer and warm in winter. That nightI passed under the porch just a few feetfrom the Beloved Who could be seenthrough the open window. Late into thenight eager young Sikhs came singularlyor in groups, paying obeisance and seekingsolutions. With wise counsel and appropriatequotations He cleared manymisunderstandings about the holy GumGranth Sahib (the Bible of the Sikhs),the need for a Living Master-guide andthe supreme role of Naam leading to theNameless and Formless Lord, the WaheGuru Aka1 Purush. The Master's thoroughknowledge of the world scriptures, not to mention His vast learning in thefield of Western philosophy and the naturalpoets like Emerson, Thoreau,Wordsworth, etc. is to say the least,May 1976astounding. Before his 20th year He hadread an entire college library; yet Hewas the simplest and humblest of men.April 8Before the sun was up, very early in themorning, when sitting for meditation Icould hear the Beloved quietly recitingin Punjabi language the sublime lap liof Guru Nanak. After taking tea and fruit, Master inquiredafter my solicitude and comfort.I replied that I was very comfortableand very happy!Master spoke of the simple villagershaving such loving souls, unclutteredwith the complexities of city life . . ."Bookish knowledge is all a wilderness. There is no way out!" The simple (notstupid), honest and strong are usuallybest in Bhajan. One of Master's petphrases is, "Simple living and highthinking."Hazur Maharaj held Satsang beforelarge throngs from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. andwhat a wonderful Satsang! With the SatGuru Maharaj coaxing forth loving sighs.I have never seen a more receptive audience. They loved Him, and He lovedthem. On this day Master proclaimed in theSatsang, "It was for the sake of youpeople that Guru Gobind Singh and Hissons gave their lives." Being traditionallydevotees of Guru Gobind Singh, thispraise of the Master made them incrediblyhappy. As the Master moved amongst them,an ageless Messiah in an ageless setting, the familiar camel and ox could be seenin the background; the palm trees, theadobe village, uncomplicated strengthand deep faith written in the peoples'faces beneath their turbans and simplerobes. Yes, then as now, miracles dohappen, but the Masters themselves donot attach any importance to miracles.
