It was highlighted that broader programmes andinterventions were introduced to deal with gangsterism whichincluded improved policing to ensure safe access in and out of theaffected areas.It was important that the WCED consider the union’s request for there-instatement of the examination board, and in the interim, theestablishment of a multi-lateral discussion forum between theunions, the WCED and other relevant stakeholders, that willconsider issues related to examinations.9. ConclusionThe oversight visit to the Western Cape Education Department providedthe Portfolio Committee with an opportunity to assess the state ofreadiness of the province in respect of the National Senior Certificate(NSC) Examination readiness for 2013. The Portfolio Committee wassatisfied with the preparations made by the WCED in respect of the 2013NSC examinations. It was further noted that the Province has developedmechanisms to deal with challenges that may arise during the examinationperiod.10. RecommendationsThe Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, having conducted anoversight visit to the Western Cape Education Department, and consideredthe issues that were raised, requests that the Minister of Basic Educationensures that the following recommendation is considered:That the Western Cape Education Department consider looking into the reestablishmentof the Examination Board, or a multi-lateral discussion forumfor Unions, the WCED and other relevant stakeholders which considerissues of examinations.Report to be considered for adoption.ANNOUNCEMENTS, TABLINGS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS NO 147─2013
