As seen from data above in the table, Pakistan has received increase in tourist<br />
arrivals 378 .4 in 1995 to 648 .0 thousand in 2004 along with increase in tourism receipts<br />
from 114 million in 1995 to 185 million in 2004 with majority tourists from Europe and<br />
America, which indicates the importance <strong>of</strong> tourism development for Pakistan.<br />
Pakistan in has also increased growth in tourist arrivals from all<br />
major tourist generating markets which are UK. USA, Canada, Germany and<br />
Afghanistan. This has been achieved by efforts <strong>of</strong>Pakistan government and Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />
Tourism and if this trend continues then tourist arrivals will achieve set its target <strong>of</strong><br />
720000 set for year 2010 as identified in the Tourism development Master plan by<br />
WTOIUNDP. (Tourism in Pakistan, 2004) In addition to this, 2004 and 2005, according<br />
to Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation, Pakistan witnessed new heights in<br />
tourists' arrivals with 23 percent growth rate in 2005 by earning $185.30 million in<br />
foreign exchange and receiving 798,300 tourists in 2005 as opposed to 648,000 in 2004.<br />
The top tourist generating countries were UK, USA, China, Canada, Japan, India,<br />
Afghanistan, Norway and Netherlands. Despite a relatively small pace <strong>of</strong> growth in terms<br />
<strong>of</strong> tourist arrivals, tourism can playa significant role in socioeconomic development as<br />
well as in improving the country's image worldwide. (Tourism in Pakistan, 2004)<br />
Problems in Tourism Development<br />
Despite the initiatives undertaken by government to develop tourism, Pakistan has<br />
been facing problems in all aspects <strong>of</strong> tourism development as tourism in Pakistan is<br />
