APPENDIX CLanguage Needs Assessments (LNA)Assessing <strong>the</strong> <strong>status</strong> <strong>of</strong> a language within a community<strong>is</strong> an important step in language revitalizationplanning and goal-setting. By completing LNAs,communities assess <strong>the</strong> <strong>status</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir languageby identifying resources, resource people, supportand projects in <strong>the</strong>ir communities and by identifyinggaps in <strong>the</strong>se areas. Based on <strong>the</strong>se gaps, communitiescan decide on <strong>the</strong>ir priorities and set goalsaccordingly. In addition, LNAs help build a strongcase for grant proposals.
