APPENDIX 1 : SMARTFIRE VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION REPORT2.4 Two-dimensional turbulent flow over a backward facing step. This test examines the SMARTFIRE κ-ε turbulence model. The comparison is carried outbetween SMARTFIRE, PHOENICS and FLOW3D. The same mesh (60×50) is used for allthe CFD codes. The flow properties and boundary conditions are described below with theconfiguration shown in Figure 11:Figure 11 - Backward facing step configurationFluid propertiesDensity: 1 kg/m 3 ,Viscosity: 1.101E-5kg/ms.Boundary conditionsAt the inletvelocity:13.0 m/s,kinetic energy:0.7605 m 2 /s 2 ,dissipation rate:31.78 m 2 /s 3 .There is no heat transfer in this problem. It should be noted that SMARTFIRE andFLOW3D use the same wall function formulation while PHOENICS uses a different wallfunction formulation.2.4.1 ResultsReattachment pointThe reattachment point is the downstream location in the x direction where there is nolonger any flow re-circulation due to the backward facing step.Appendix 11.1 Page 141-12 12
