ROTARY INTERNATIONAL<br />
The RI Board is responsible for doing whatever may be necessary for the longterm<br />
benefit <strong>of</strong> the organization, ensuring that the original purpose is preserved,<br />
studying and teaching its fundamentals, and preserving its ideals, its ethics, its<br />
unique features <strong>of</strong> organization, and its extension throughout the world. The Board<br />
shall also adopt a strategic plan and report on it at each meeting <strong>of</strong> the Council on<br />
Legislation. (RIB 5.010.) All RI Board decisions, unless specified otherwise, take<br />
effect immediately upon the adjournment <strong>of</strong> the meeting at which they are made.<br />
(RCP 28.005.) The action <strong>of</strong> the RI Board is subject to an appeal to the district representatives<br />
<strong>of</strong> the most recent Council on Legislation or, if the appeal is received<br />
by the general secretary within three months <strong>of</strong> the next Council, the next Council<br />
on Legislation. (RIB 5.030.)<br />
The RI Board may appoint an executive committee <strong>of</strong> at least five but no more<br />
than seven <strong>of</strong> its members. It may delegate to the committee authority to exercise,<br />
between Board meetings, the power to make decisions on behalf <strong>of</strong> the RI Board<br />
where the policy <strong>of</strong> RI has been established. The committee also evaluates the performance<br />
<strong>of</strong> the general secretary at least annually and reports its findings to the<br />
RI Board. The RI Board in each year prescribes the specific terms <strong>of</strong> reference for<br />
the Executive Committee. (RIB 5.070.)<br />
Officers <strong>of</strong> Rotary International<br />
President<br />
The president is the highest <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> RI. The president is the principal person to<br />
speak on the organization’s behalf, presides at conventions and meetings <strong>of</strong> the<br />
RI Board, counsels the general secretary, and performs other related duties. (RIB<br />
6.140.1.)<br />
President-elect<br />
The president-elect has only those duties that arise from the RI Bylaws and from<br />
membership on the RI Board, but may be assigned further duties by the president<br />
or the RI Board. (RIB 6.140.2.)<br />
Vice President<br />
The vice president is selected by the incoming president at the RI Board’s first<br />
meeting each year from among the members <strong>of</strong> the RI Board serving the second<br />
year <strong>of</strong> their terms. The vice president serves for a one-year term beginning on<br />
1 July. (RIB 6.020.) In the event <strong>of</strong> a vacancy in the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> president, the vice<br />
president succeeds to the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> president and selects a new vice president from<br />
among the remaining members <strong>of</strong> the Board. (RIB 6.070.) The vice president performs<br />
such assignments as may be requested by the president. (RCP 29.030.)<br />
Treasurer<br />
The treasurer is selected by the incoming president at the RI Board’s first meeting<br />
each year from among the members <strong>of</strong> the RI Board serving the second year <strong>of</strong> their<br />
terms. The treasurer serves for a one-year term beginning on 1 July. (RIB 6.020.)<br />
The treasurer regularly receives financial information from, and confers with,<br />
the general secretary on the management <strong>of</strong> RI finances. The treasurer makes<br />
appropriate reports to the RI Board and also makes a report to the RI Convention.<br />
The treasurer has only those duties and powers that arise from membership on the<br />
RI Board, but may be assigned further duties by the president or the RI Board. (RIB<br />
